I just prepped a long comment and it seems to have gone into the bit bucket.

I strongly prefer #2 aesthetically and functionally.

If there's any chance you are taking other input on tabs, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you fix the VS2005 tab ordering system? It's the one thing I despise about VisualStudio, and is a far, far more important issue than identifying the active tab.

When I close the tab for the I am working on, the focus shifts to some (essentially) random tab that is neither the tab I want nor the tab I expect to receive focus.

There are lots of tabbed browsers out there now. I'm reading this in Maxthon (which is based on IE6). It has exactly the tabbing behavior I want. New tabs appear to the right of the active tab. Closing a tab shifts the focus one tab to the left (unless there is no tab to the left, in which case focus shifts one tab to the right). It's simple, predictable, and almost always exactly what I want. Mozilla has a similar behavior (not exactly the same, closing a tab shifts focus to the right rather than to the left). I prefer Maxthon's behavior but could certainly live with Mozilla's behavior. The key is to fix the (apparently) random focus shifting that VS engages in when tabs are closed. And yes, I do realize that there is a "logic" to the behavior VS uses (even though it is never what I want or expect).

Thanks for listening,
-Don

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

James J. I think the reason that a lot of people are having difficulty with the usability aspect of the 1st is that the tabs in #1 seem to be separated from the window the tab is attached to. The highlight from the bottom of the window border is nicely preserved across the face of the tab in #2. This makes it very easy to see which tab is active by following the highlight with your eye to the tab connected to it. In #1 there is always a border drawn between the tab and the window it represents which makes drawing that connection harder. My suggestion is use the curves ( I like how it looks in Eclipse too ) but keep the same edge drawing code from the 2nd.

Re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Tabs #1
Active Tab 2
Aesthetics 6
Tabs #2
Active Tab 6
Aesthetics 2

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design #1: Both 7.
Design #2: Both 1.

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design 1:
1. 5
2. 7

Design 2:
1. 7
2. 5

I don't know about anyone else, but typically I keep one tab open on the right and will keep all things here; usually Server Explorer, Solution Explorer, Properties, Index, and Toolbox. Removing the small gray line that separates the two would make it appear as if the tab and window were one entity, as logically they are. This would make the tabs both look and function better.

Looking at the two designs individually, the former does not dim the inactive tabs enough (active: 3, looks: 5). The inactive tabs of the latter do not look like tabs, but part of the background (active: 6, looks: 2).

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

1.1 = 6
1.2 = 7

2.1 = 6
2.2 = 4

However, I don't understand why this is an issue since the next generation of Windows apps will have full theme support ?

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design 1
1. 4
2. 6

Design 2
1. 6
2. 2

I know you didn't ask for this but is it possable to color the tabs at the top like where it says Form1.cs[Design] could we color those tabs in a general preference somewhere say like all design ones are orange, all code ones are green, all classes without UI are blue. Frankly, (I speak as a statistician) any responses that you have that are not 1, 3 or 7 can't be reliably included in your final analysis (if an accurate measurement of your audience's opinion is what you are truly after)

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

bao,

While I agree that it is cumbersome to move your mouse all the way over to the x or use any of the other methods to close a tab, I personally think putting an x into every tab would be a waste of space.

An alternative would be to make the tab actions configurable so that the middle mouse button, for example, could be used to close tab (see Maxthon browser tab options as an example).
re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design #1
Active Tab Visibility - 2
Aesthetically Pleasing - 7

Design #2
Active Tab Visibility - 7
Aesthetically Pleasing - 2

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Go with design #1 except with the inactive tabs greyed-out like in design #2

Off topic: I would like VS2005 to be able to show the design view on one monitor and the code view on another, for those of us with a dual-monitor setup.

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design #1
Active Tab Visibility - 1
Aesthetically Pleasing - 1

Design #2
Active Tab Visibility - 7
Aesthetically Pleasing - 7

Keep current Tab-Appearance!

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design 1
See Active: 1 (not easy to see)
Pleasing: 7 (much more pleasing than #2)

Design 2
See Active: 7 (easier to see)
Pleasing: 1 (ugly)

How about combining the good parts of both? Possibly use chiseled text for the non-active tab: draw the text in white, then redraw the text again in white, and offset -1,-1. It's a good inactive text appearance. -Allan

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

I think the tab design in Beta 1 was the best. Where you had the color scheme of your design #1 but slightly rounded (instead of slanted) tabs for the tool windows. The slanted tabs don't look as professional in my opinion.

If I had to choose between your two designs presented here, I'd say #2. I don't like either of these designs. However, if I had to choose, I'd go with #1. I'd cringe if design #2 was used... I hated Visual Studio 2003 because the IDE was mucho ugly, and #2 isn't doing much for me as far as aesthetics. For one thing, it doesn't go at all with the rest of the widgets in the IDE, and it's just ugly in general.

My ratings:

Design #1:
Active-Tab Visibility: 4 (not important to me)
Aesthetics: 5 (Beta 1's design would be 7)

Design #2:
Active-Tab Visibility: 4 (ditto)
Aesthetics: 1 (looks like crap)

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

I agree with a few others in that the second tab set is much better duew to seeing the active tab. This constant reinventing the wheel is what drove me crazy during the dotcom frenzy! Anyway - back in 'the day' - MS took a lot of pride in a Common User Access spec. The $ spent testing large user groups and counting mouse clicks, etc., was legendary. Designing tab controles is a job for the Windows UI teem, no?

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

Design #1
Ease of Use: 1
Aesthetics: 5

Design #2
Ease of Use: 7
Aesthetics: 6

When you are working fast and furious in the IDE, you want visual cues that quickly indicate the action you should take. Users look at a window decide if that is what they want to use, and if necessary change to another window using the tab control. On that basis the tabs should be designed so that identification of the window content is as clear as possible and I would therefore choose Design #1.

re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

#1 looks nice but won't be usable with many tabs. The overlapping is so small it's hard to see anyway.

Tab style 2 is easier to see the active tab, but less appealing.

If the icons in Tab style 1 were shown in color for the active tab and the inactive tab icons were greyed, it would be easier to determine the active tab.

Hopefully, there won't be too many tabs in the Tools/Server Explorer or Solution Explorer areas because scrolling horizonally is bad. Hopefully, multiple tabs can collapse to just icons or make it an option to just show icons without the descriptive text.

As for the document tabs putting in an icon to indicate Design Mode vs Code Mode (and replace the "[Design]" text) would also be helpful. Anything to reduce horizontal scrolling when you have numerous code files open.
re: Feedback Requested: Visual Studio 2005 Tab Design

On balance, I prefer style 2, but I don't really find the layout all that useable with the tabs on the bottom. Aesthetic pleasure is a close second, but second none-the-less. My screen is already crammed full of tool windows. Making more of the text visible helps especially when the tabs are very small. (when I have three or so tool windows sized small to see my code window)

A note on the MDI tabs: I like the drop down open file chooser control that was added, but I miss the tab scroll that was in 2003. If I have too many windows open, then I have to visually search through that list. Also, I don't like the fact that the relative path of the code file is displayed in the tab. This makes the tab very large. Perhaps the path could be displayed on a mouse over??
re: Don

I just need to say Don's suggesting is FAR from representing the common demands of all VS users.
