Just curious - how can you tell if an element's contents is being ellipsed or not? Or do you show the tool tip even when the content fits?

Excellent series of articles Aaron! Thanks

Out of curiosity how is the main grid implemented? Is this done with dynamic HTML or is it a specially developed ActiveX control that is embedded in the page?

Regarding: element's contents is being ellipsed or not

There is no easy way that I am aware of to detect the presents of IE's "automatic" ellipses. The only way I figure to do it is to use the clipping rect of the text and see if it is bigger than the clipping rect of the container. In the case of Microsoft CRM, we just always show the tool tip. The cost / benefit of doing all the extra work is just not worth it.

Regarding the Grid:

I am proud to say that the client-side portion of the Grid is written entirely DHTML. There is a server-side control written in C# that renders the HTML as required.
