How do you name your computer

2006_1101_200024

Windows gives examples of "Kitchen Computer" or "Mary's Computer" for setting the name of a computer (Computer Name tab in System Properties). But I'm sure that most people don't name their computers that way and show off a bit of creativity in it.

Previously I used to use names from Asterix like GetAFix for my main dev box. Now I exclusively use names from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Some of the machines I use are named as below

  1. traal: My test box
  2. Krikkit: My dev box
  3. Vogon: A old vintage machine I have at work which I use to test some perf scenarios (Vista on 512mb RAM :^) )
  4. Hooloovoo : My personal laptop
  5. Bugblatter: Another laptop

What name do you use?

My main desktop has been called "Madoka" for years. The laptop "Hikaru". All the HD have also names taken from Japanese animation characters. At the office the policy is more varied, but there's a good core of names taken from Tolkien's "the Lord of the Rings". Back in the good old days my desktop used to be called "Nazgul" and the web server "Shelob", for instance. Endless fun...

For home PCs, I use planetary objects.  The more prominent the computer, the larger the planet that it represents.  Thus, my primary PC in high school was Jupiter.  Back then when laptops were only considered secondary machines, I would name the laptops after the moons of the planet which their parent machines represented.  Thus, my laptop was IO.  By tradition, even though I have no desktop machines anymore, my own computer is still IO.

Back in high school, I named my dad's computer Saturn and my mom's Neptune.  My PDA, a decade later, is Europa.  Technically, it was the person's domain of authority who received the planet's domain.  Thus, to this day, all my technology devices are named after satellites of Jupiter and my parent's devices are satellites of their respective planets.

Also, my parent's NAS is ISS (for international space station) as it's not a PC (planet) or a laptop (moon), but a thing that helps everyone out.  Don't even get me started on the naming of the servers: they are named after primates.  Larger the potential of the server, the larger the primate.

For machines at the office, I use a 3-4 digit company code followed by a 3-5 digit asset code.  The number of digits in the company code and asset code code depends on the side of the company.  Larger companies (or companies that may become large will get the 4-digit code whereas ma-and-pa shops get the 3.

With regard to office services, I name them after that they represent suffixed with a two digit.  I let Active Directory OUs control the departmental and building stuff.  This I get FileServer01, TerminalServer01, TerminalServer02, WebServer01, SqlServer01, etc...

All the sudden I have this crazy urge to send my resume to the marketing department... strange.

I have a domain running at home so i name the machines Corp style, example: lyalin-dev01. This tells me its my machine playing role of dev.
