PC World's review of Office Live Workspaces mentions Access

There is a good review of Office Live Workspace just published by PCWorld. They mention our favorite Office application, Microsoft Access...

“Office Live Workspace supports Excel files, too, though none of the templates available when we reviewed the site were Excel files. On the other hand, the service doesn't support Microsoft's Access database format, which is too bad--Access users looking to delegate data entry and to simplify reporting tasks might benefit greatly from an online database-sharing arrangement.”

I'm curious what people on this blog think. Is there a need for a "online database-sharing arrangement"? What do you think of Office Live Workspace?

Well, it would be nice if .mdb files were supported. Every time I try to upload one I get:

Error

The following file(s) have been blocked by the administrator: documents/myfile.mdb

It would be nice if an .mdb file could be checked out like other workspace documents, and an alert could be sent to me if anyone modified it.

Well, I can see it both ways, actually.

I use some databases that aren't pretty psuedo applications - they're tables, queries and a little reporting.  The people who use these access databases know what they're doing, generally.

I also have some nice stuff with switchboards.  I don't NEED any shared workspace for that - just a folder on a server and enough knowledge on the part of my users to copy and paste what I send them in an e-mail to their desktop.  Then the knowledge gets shared safely.

The front end/back end stuff really isn't available (okay, I've done workarounds with Excel before - but it's really cumbersome and very slow.) for any other Office application, and that mostly (although not completely) mitigates the need for a shared workspace.

what it will be really great is that we can place and access application inside a web page, Imagine . . .

like we do with the saved as, like save for the web, and even a web publishing wizzard . . .like .Net with asp pages . . .

and we can see reports in the web, and user can see those reports..

it can be some kind of integration with reporting services, maybe that the publising wizzard converts to a sql report . . .

and also maybe save forms like aspx pages . . .

imagine that kind of integration . . .

That will be great !!
