Olympic Cold
A few of my coworkers and I were discussing the Olympic controversy regarding the ages of the female gymnasts. After much thoughtful discussion, we came up with several possible rational explanations for the discrepancies.
- Time travel - perhaps the gymnasts were sent back a year so both the old and new official records are correct.
- Cryogenic chambers - this could be used to explain how Kim Gwang Suk was listed as 15 for three years in a row. Also, since the actual age since birth would be different from years lived, the athlete could have two different ages depending on the occasion.
- Different numerical systems - There may be a numerical system that skips from 14 to 16. After all, some hotels lack 13th floors.
Be that as it may, I'm not terribly concerned. The Olympics are still fun to watch and all the althetes are worlds better at their events than I will ever be.
