Many folks want us to get the latest version of a file when they check it out for editing. On the surface, this does seem like a good idea.

re: What you wish for

I don't want "get latest on checkout" by default. As long as we get a very obvious indication that there is a newer version in the repository than the version I just pended an edit on, then I'm more than happy. In fact, I would argue that the TFS team kind of did this to themselves by calling the action "checkout" instead of "edit" like Subversion does. Many people expect a "checkout" to do a get & lock and checkout does neither in TFVC.

re: What you wish for

Actually, we do currently write out some information to the Output window when you checkout a file which is either out of date or has pending changes in other workspaces. It's certainly not front-and-center, but the info should be made available. I should note that VC had some issues instantiating the output trace in some cases, but I think that's being worked on, too.

As for the name, it's certainly always a struggle to find the right terminology for something given the current language in use- particularly given functional differences. I wasn't here yet when the command names were decided upon, but I'm guessing they decided to call it "checkout" to contrast nicely with "checkin" as those are two of the most basic version control operations. Still, that is a very good point.

VSTS Links - 05/30/2006

Rob Caron blogs about a Team System TestRun Report Viewer and Ensuring Team Foundation Server Availability....
