On Windows Server 2003, the solution is simple, as there is already an API (called ExposeSnapshots()) to assign a drive letter to a shadow copy device. This API can be exercised

re: A bit of black magic: How to assign drive letters to VSS shadow copies... on Windows XP !

Thanks Adi. This is so perfect. For those of us struggling with backups in the XP environment, the combination of rsync (plus ssh) and vshadow creates the most efficient solution for local and offsite backups I can find. Highly recommended. I just added the rsync command into the vss-exec.cmd file after "Try to execute some commands".
(rsync seems so dangerous with open files; in my experience it overwrites exisiting files with new copies of open files that are damaged (failed verification - update retained). .pst files overwritten in this way cannot be opened (although they can be substantially recovered with scanpst).
Grateful for any additional thoughts on rsync integration with vshadow.

Assign drive letters to VSS shadow copies under Windows XP

I didn't think it was possible, previously, but apparently it is. But it does seem to copy much more data than before on a closed .pst file, for instance (of course .pst files are strange animals)

re: A bit of black magic: How to assign drive letters to VSS shadow copies... on Windows XP !

PST replication is weird - many resyncing techologies are not getting it right.

In Windows Server 2003 R2, there is a new replication technology called RDC (Remote Differential Compression) that can have amazing performance reductions on PST file replication.
