the queryable datasets features is very nice, but the ORM features are not that exceptional ...
the xml mapping of entities is not really needed, reflection and caching should suffice after the classes of code have been generated ....
I got a friend who sells a toplink-like ORM which does all of this already in smalltalk, Java and .NET

Where do we report bugs? I've just come across a mapping issue, where the database has columns of type smalldatetime and varchar which are mapped to DateTime and String. However, the compiler barfs citing incompatible types.

These are known issues. You'll need to make changes to your generated .csdl file:

(1) Add the attribute "Unicode='false'" to the property that was mapped from varchar.
(2) Add the attribute "PreserveSeconds='false'" to the property that was mapped from the smalldatetime.

Thanks for pointing out the forum links - I missed them in the docs. Since Tommy says it's a known issue I won't report it. I've pretty much got my sample app running entirely though EDF/LINQ now, which is darn cool. A few things I've coded around as they aren't implemented yet, otherwise it's great - reduced the amount of code by about 1/2.

I have a couple of questions regarding the DataContext.
1. Object tracking
If I request the same entity several times will it return the same object reference?
If the DataContext keeps track of object references, will it detect if a reference is no longer used in the application and do the appropiate cleanup?
2. Remoting
From what I could understand it seems that Entity objects will support lazy loading, if this is the case I infer that the entity objects keep a reference to the DataContext that created them. How will this behave under remoting scenarios?

Hi Roberto,

1. Object Tracking: yes, by default we'll do identity tracking and return the same object for the entity in the store. We expect that the appropriate pattern is that typically the object-context will be short-lived so we won't need to do clean up. That said, we know that there are scenarios where you need a long-lived context and we're looking at options for that.

2. Remoting: when remoting them entities become detached from the object-context that created them, so you can no longer do delay loading of its related entities (unless you re-attach the entitiy to a context).

However, I believe you are still avoiding a major problem (a missing "pillar" in the solution perhaps? ;)

Quote from the Entity Framework MSDN article: "If the schema of the DataSet is known at application design time, then using typed DataSets provides a much better experience when using LINQ".

Requiring compile-time knowledge of the database contents (entity fields if you like) is a cop-out. C# 3.0 has addressed several language problems with some quite hair raisingly clever approaches, and I wish the team would turn its attention to this one. The problem for enterprise software developers is that individual users want and need to add data to the "standard" tables/Entities which are unique their deployment. Various approaches are used (views, extra tables etc), but at the end of the day, if my Employee object needs "ShoeSize" and I didn't ship the record definition with this, I still want to access it in a typed fashion at run time. However, I do not want to recompile my source code. Employee.ShoeSize should be available dynamically if it is retrieved from the database.

In other words, the metadata of the language types needs to be (much) more dynamic.

Most approaches I have seen either go to a "typeless" approach (Employee.Field("ShoeSize")), or else a combination (Employee.FirstName plus Employee.ExtendedField("ShoeSize"). The first throws away the easier syntax that comprises the second half of any LINQ article(!). The second introduces first and second class data access, and effectively doubles processing.

Clearly neither is acceptable.

I was finally hoping to apply Microsoft provided solution for good old O/R mapping problem. I was playing with the CTP and after a while I realised that I could not make my persistent class inherit from a non-persistent class.

Let's say in my domain object model I have to have a root class from where every other class will be inherited. Obviously the root class does not need to be persisted, it simply adds some behavior to all the objects that I am going to use in my application.

Is it going to be tackled in some way? Or am I missing something?

vNext seems like a pivotal tool in the data access game as I am consulting at an organization struggling with this issue right now. I have been using ORMs (nHibernate and DLinq) for the last year but the missing piece has always been Reporting. Now SMDL seems to address this at least for Reporting (I am still not sure for Analysis services). It seems to me that the Entity Data Model is the glue that will bring together Linq for entities/SQL and SMDL as we cannot have competing models. I am hoping that EDM will allow us to abstract the organization corporate data access and be usable across our applications. In the short term I am concerned with going down the SMDL road when it looks like the long term direction is EDM or are they the same thing?

Regarding the question on SMDL and EDM...

One of the motivations for the EDM has been to address the proliferation of models that are present within one’s application infrastructure. Indeed, today one typically must define an application domain model (typically C# classes, sometimes UML or other model), then one defines a logical DB model for persistence and for other services (reporting, analysis, workflow…) you start building some other sets of models. Within the SQL division we are committed to rationalizing the various models that we have (such as SMDL, UDM, SMO… ) with the EDM. The effort to rationalize the models shall happen over the next few releases. Today, SMDL is the best option for reporting and it lines up well with EDM.. The good news is that we are developing a migration path from SMDL to EDM and there is effort underway in this release to pave the way for that in the future.

I have been loosely following the technical literature on Linq and ADO.net vnext, but I have not written any code yet. I wanted to ask a question about inserts and updates in the new world. Currently when I do inserts or updates my data objects have properties where a user can set the property, and alot of the properties map to columns in a table. No big surprise there, next for each property in the data object that maps to a column I have a bool flag that is set to show if the column has changed. Each data object has an update method that can perform an insert or an update depending on the key property, in either the insert or the update a sql string is built that sets just the values that have changed, so this increases the performance of the data objects by just sending what is needed. None of these ideas are new, but I wanted to find out in ado.net vnext is there in built in attribute flags where a field in the data object can be have a flag built in to modify only what is needed or is ther some other mechanism in the Linq inserts and updates that takes of this.

Any help on this would be appreciated

Are these bulk insert API-s there in this CTP ? I would be very excited about some decent solution to make lots of binary data inserts fast.

One question to all:

Is binding to local variables going to be possible with LINQ?

E.g.:

I have a dynamic SQL string, say:

--------------------

"Select " + cslist + "into :lsVariable, :llidValor" + " FROM " + ff + "

where variable like :psVariable";

--------------------

and want to bind the input and output variables to variables in the method, say to parameters. And I don't want this code to be seen - it makes it less readable and unnecesarily exposes the implementation.

In the above example, cslist would be a string variable with the list of columns wanted in the result set (an input variable), :psVariable would contain a value for the where clause (another input variable - this time it needs to be parsed and bound to an existing variable in scope) - and the :IsVariable and :llidValor who determine where the corresponding values from the loaded record set will go.

2 Hours on the phone with MS Support and there best answer is move to this new blah, blah, blah. Since there's an abundance of information and webcasts on using this util that I've already read or watched I'd really like to do some prototyping with it.
