Speakers

G. Andrew Duthie, aka .net DEvHammer, is the Developer Evangelist for Microsoft’s Mid-Atlantic States district, where he provides support and education for developers working with the .net development platform. In addition to his work with Microsoft, Andrew is the author of several books on ASP.NET and web development, and has spoken at numerous industry conferences from VSLive! and ASP.NET Connections, to Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference (PDC) and Tech-Ed. Andrew is also the creator and developer of Community Megaphone, a site designed for promoting and finding developer community events. Ashish Jaiman works as ISV Architect Evangelist with Microsoft, managing ISVs in the Mid-Atlantic area. In his role he drives and accelerates the adoption of new (mostly pre release) technologies and tools within the ISV community. His current focus is SQL 2008, VS 2008, Win2008, Net3.5 and web based technologies. Ashish has over twelve years of experience in designing and developing enterprise software, bringing technical solutions to business problems and consistently delivered high quality software on time and on budget. Zhiming Xue “Z" is a Microsoft Architect Evangelist based in the Mid Atlantic area. He has more than 12 years of software development, consulting and IT experience, specializing in enterprise application architecture, development and integration. While with Microsoft Services he played technical and architectural roles on many consulting projects for large enterprise customers in both the commercial sector and the public sector. He has presented various topics at Microsoft events and local user groups. Through his blogs and publications he has reached readers in the U.S., China and other countries and regions. He holds a Ph. D. in Management Science from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, a professional certification from American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS), as well as several Microsoft certifications. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) provides three tools for deploying an Analysis Services database onto an Analysis Services server in the production environment:

· Using an XML Script Use
SQL Server Management Studio to generate an XML script of the metadata of an existing Analysis Services database, and then run that script on another server to recreate the initial database.

· Using the Analysis Services Deployment Wizard
Use the Analysis Services Deployment Wizard to use the XMLA output files generated by an Analysis Services project to deploy the project's metadata to a destination server.

· Synchronizing Analysis Services Databases
Use the Synchronize Database Wizard to synchronize the metadata and data between any two Analysis Services databases.

The main enhancement to highlight is that SSAS 2005 includes an engine for use in deploying Analysis Services projects and solutions. During the development process, you can use the deployment engine to deploy new projects to a test instance of Analysis Services; when your development is complete, you can then use the engine to deploy the projects to a production instance of Analysis Services. You can use the deployment engine to synchronize metadata between a new or updated Analysis Services project in Business Intelligence Development Studio and an existing instance of Analysis Services or to overwrite metadata from one instance to another. You can also use the deployment engine at the command prompt to provide additional flexibility when you deploy Analysis Services projects and solutions

SSIS

The ability of SSIS to integrate different technologies manipulates data, like “fuzzy logic” based data cleansing components. Support for complex data routing in SSIS allows anomalous data to not only be identified, but also be automatically corrected and replaced with better values. This enables “closed loop” cleansing scenarios. In addition to its built-in data quality features, SSIS can be extended to work closely with third-party data-cleansing solutions

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS can be defined as deploying software as a hosted service and then accessing it over the internet.

There are two key differences between SaaS (Software as a Service) and SaaP (Software as a Product).

· Licensing – SaaS is based on non perpetual licensing model, where the consumer of the software pay per use of the software, where as traditional software licenses are based on perpetual licensing, you buy the rights to use the software and can use it as long as you want.

· IT responsibilities – The infrastructure and management responsibilities for the software are of on the provider as the software is hosted by the provider and the access to use is given over the internet.

SaaS opens up a new market segment for the enterprise software provider, small and medium size business, which now can afford the software as they just pay for the service and not for the infrastructure and management of the software.

I have recently joined Microsoft as an Independent Software Vendor Architect Evangelist, covering the DC and PA area.

My role as described by my boss (Larry Gregory) is

“Improving partner satisfaction and accelerating platform adoption by providing architectural guidance for managed partners and inspiring the broader partner ecosystem.”

Meaning that I will be evangelizing new Microsoft technologies to managed ISVs, their business and technical personal.

In my previous life I was working as an architect with a small ISV in DC and was mainly dealing with .Net (both Windows and Web forms) and SQL Server, I have been working with Microsoft technologies for last 10+ years. I have also tried out Java and J2EE in my previous roles.

I would take the opportunity to share my thoughts, ideas, opinions and ramblings through this blog.
