I realize that this is unlikely to happen; I assume msbuild depends too much on CLR v2.0 already to make it usable with VS2003. And of course, true *integration* with VS2003 will never happen.

One practical note, if I were a co-worker of you, I would not be amused by the fact that you didn't strip the e-mail addresses (like you stripped the company names). I do hear that question often. I've added it to my list of "to blog about" topics. I think there is a lot to be said here... now it's just a matter of putting all those thoughts into the blog. Thank you again :)

Luc,

The e-mail addresses were put here deliberately :). Call it dogfooding of the exchange server spam filters :). I've been posting with my real e-mail and putting it across the web for about 3 years now... and I very seldom get junk mail. When I do it goes to the Exchange team so they can better their spam filters :)

Thanks for the feedback though. MSBuild does allow you to build .net Modules. Our CSC task exposes a parameter called TargetType. Our target type currently is able to consume:

* exe
* winexe
* library
* module

If you are using our target files you'll note that Microsoft.CSharp.targets defines the CSC step and in it you can see:

TargetType="$(OutputType)"

So as long as you set OutputType = module you will build a netmodule.

Because OutputType is just a property you can define it on the command like (/p:OutputType=module) as an environment variable (set outputtype=module) or in your project file (<OutputType>Module</OutputType>)

Do it in any of the above ways and you will note that a netmodule comes out.

Because VS build goes through MSBuild you *can* build a netmodule inside of VS as long as you do any of the above. Now as soon as you F5 (build) inside of the IDE you will be able to have your Visual Studio project generating a .netmodule. Isn't that cool!

I love it!

re: 001 - MSBuild status

That's great!
