Microsoft will bridge Open XML and ODF in 2007 Office System

Remember my last post about ODF?

Things go quite fast in our industry. Indeed, Microsoft has decided to enable the support for ODF format both for reading and writing documents.

  1. Microsoft is funding and providing architectural guidance to three partners to build the Open XML Translator, a set of tools being developed as open source, on SourceForge, under a BSD license, to enable translation of Office Open XML and ODF documents.
    1. This will provide read and “save as” functionality of ODF in Office.
    2. Down-level Office capability is offered through the Office Compatibility Packs which give older versions of Office the ability to use Open XML.
  2. Microsoft is also announcing the creation of an Interoperability Center for Office 2007 – an add-in that adds itself to the file menu in Office 2007 where users can get .PDF, .XLS, and .ODF interoperability.
  3. Microsoft is doing the Open XML to ODF translator to be responsive to its government customers – especially those where they need to communicate with constituents who are using ODF.

I can, somehow, underdand that but, to be honnest, I'm not seeing any strong demand for ODF from Corporate or Consumer segments.

Some links of interest:

This was announced back on September last year already, complete with the name of the French company behind it.

Also, whether there will be a OOX to ODF converter remains to be seen. Neither the current source code, nor the comments from Clever Age makes me believe it will be developed. What's being developed is an ODF to OOX converter, and that's easy to understand why...

Last, but not least, I would find it laughable that governments think it's good to take OOX under their umbrella when Microsoft relies on a third party to do the work. How unreliable indeed? Microsoft is simply trying to lobby against ODF with this, period.

Alright Mike (BTW, point us to your blog so that we can also learn from you), I take your words... and so do all my readers!

The very close future will tell us whether or not there will be a bi-directional OOX-ODF converter.

Let's wait for a little while then.
