Matt when on to ask what a test architect does. This question was so good (and the answer so long), that I thought I'd respond here. So, what is a test architect.
So, you say that a test architect, often gets involved in operational part of testing project.

I think there is always overlap of roles and perception among the titles of "Engineer", "Manager" and "Architect".

How do the roles of "Engineer" and "Architect" in software field compare to those in civil Engineering? I have not heard about the role of "Architect" in mechanical/Automobile/Marine/Electrical/Electronics Engineering desciplines as compared to "Civil" engineering descipline.

Google tells me that "Although the word "architect" derives from the Greek phrase meaning "master builder," in practice

"architecture" has gradually acquired the connotation "art

of building."

Do you see any commonality?

Architecture as an art where as engineering is seen as definite (to the extent one can believe) application of science ...

Test Architecture - an Art?

I have no idea - I think in reality, titles are ambiguous. That's the deal with the Test Architect title as well - it may mean something about art, but it's probably just a fancy title :}.

At MS, we have several test architects, and several others with different titles who perform the TA role. Across the company, however, the test role varies so much from person to person that for the most part, we've consolidated on one title - SDET. That's easier than coming up with 40 or 50 titles that reflect the varied roles that testers perform.
