To Webcast or to hold a local event?

I would like to know if developers are more likely to watch a webcast or attend a local event (assuming the topic is the same and it is of interest to them? Personally, I like the local events because there is more to be gained from the event than just technical information. The networking and other small talk can be very beneficial. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to sit back and watch a webcast in the convenience of my cube or reclining chair at home. What is more useful to you or which do you prefer?

The convenience factor of web casts is great, but for building contacts, nothing compares to attending live events.

Local events are worth it if you actually want to see the whole show; and yes, networking is an added bonus.

I enjoy the webcasts and lately have been attending quite a few to my surprise. Firstly there are a lot of time constraints that prevent me from going to local meetings and presentations. By me developing my code and attending a webcast on the pc works out great. I can get the best of both worlds, and can spare some time to go on a coffee break or two.

All things being equal, I'd prefer the local event. But usually cost will be a differentiator, as well as the opinion of an employer on whether or not they want to give time off (luckily I don't have to worry about that now, but it was a major concern before I became un/self employer).

I prefer the local events simply for the fact that there is the ability to network. Just make sure that the event is what it is made out to be in the announcement. I have seen several where the speaker does not show or something else goes wrong and the show is not what was advertised. I know some things are out of the event staffs hands but you should always have plan B.

The local events are great, it's always easier to interact and ask questions in person, however, the webcasts are more convenient.

Ideally I would rather attend a live event, but it's good to also have it available as a webcast as well for those who can't make it.
