Another day in the Office

A blog about Microsoft Office, Groove, SharePoint, Software Development, Business Productivity, Social Computing, Cognitive Science and anything else that comes to mind.

This stream of conciousness brought to you by Alistair Speirs, Office Technology Specialist @ Microsoft Australia.
Does Australia value Technologists?

I'm in a tell-it-how-it-is mood today. Are we just a nation of sheep shearers and miners? Here is a snapshot of a reputable Australian newspaper's IT section:

  • D&D co-creater dead. While tragic, this guy was hardly a technology pioneer, it was all just Paper, Pencils and Polyhedrons
  • Jimmy Wales rorts expenses. Sorry, this belongs in the business section - unless of course it is irrelevant there too
  • Hack into a Windows PC. Never mind that the vulnerability is in firewire (which is standard on like all none some PCs) or that the vulnerability was also apparently demonstrated on Linux and Mac in 2005 and is a problem in firewire, not windows itself (disclaimer: all I know about security vulnerabilities is not to use my own name as my password - Remember, I'm the Office guy - you need to speak slowly).
  • Increase in US crime rate blamed on people carrying more expensive stuff... yawn. Can somebody say iSlowNewsDay
  • Stitching lots of photos taken at different times together creates some oddities. see above. yawn.

Are we to rely on external news sources and the occasional ACS journal for IT related brain-food. When will tech sections in newspapers decide that "tech" doesn't mean unrelated nerd content and "odds and ends" articles? At least we still have istartedsomething
