Anandi’s Thoughts

Random stuff (mostly) about working as a Program Manager at Microsoft
In love with LibraryThing

This isn't even vaguely Microsoft-related but I thought you technologically-inclined folks might be interested.  I stumbled across LibraryThing last night, a site that lets you catalog your books, rate them, share them with others, etc.  Since I'm a geeky, keeping track of things sort of person, I love this.

I've always been bummed about not keeping track of all the books I've ever read - I bet it would be a *huge* list because I spent most of my life pre-college with my nose in a book.  My leisure reading habit came to a grinding halt in college because I had way too much studying and school-related reading to do.  I picked it up again in graduate school and of course, when I got a "real job" it was nice to have $$ to buy shiny new books and piles of used books at various bookstores.  I'm also a big fan of the library, a habit my mom got me hooked on as a kid.  We'd go to the giant library in the sky on weekends (aka the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh) and I'd get a whole bag full of books which I'd devour for the next 2-3 weeks.

But I digress.  I thought this site was really unique and fun.  It's also got a pretty clean, simple UI and is extremely easy to use.

In case you're curious, here's the link to my library.  I haven't put in most of my techie books yet so a lot of what's in there is pretty girly fiction stuff.  I'm soon going to hit the 200-book free account limit, so I'll have to break down and actually pay for the lifetime membership.  At $25, it seems like a pretty good deal (as long as the site will be up and running).  I also plan to use it to get recommendations for books to read - you can read other peoples' reviews and see their book lists as well (if they've marked them public).

What's in your LibraryThing?

I use Media Man (http://www.imediaman.com/) It looks like it does a lot of the same stuff, and also catalogs most other forms of entertainment. Looks things up by ISBN or SKU from Amzon. Can't share on the web, but I can live with that myself. <grin>)

Wow, seriously this is cool! You think Microsoft is doing something like this? Or maybe they'll buy 'em? :-)

Blake - Yup, that would be too cool if Microsoft bought 'em :).

Chris - thanks for the link to Media Man. I was wondering about whether there was a place to catalog my CDs.

Yeah, that would be cool if Microsoft bought them, er, I mean me.

LibraryThing is all-books right now, although some users enter their CDs and movies by searching a library, like the Library of Congress, that catalogs them. The point is to do books REALLY well. It's the only site that uses libraries like the Library of Congress as well as Amazon, which is useful if you own books not currently in print and sold by Amazon (ie., if you are over 20). And the social features are much deeper, with a much larger user and book base. (If you don't believe me, try Reader2.com and Bibliophil.org.)

In the spirit of friendship to social software, let me give some other all- or other-media sites: Stuffopolis.com, Mediachest.com, DVDSpot.com, DVDAfficionado.com. I'd be interested to know what people think of them.
