Anandi’s Thoughts

Random stuff (mostly) about working as a Program Manager at Microsoft
My experiment with Windows Media Encoder, part II

Thanks to Zhan, who is an awesome troubleshooter, for letting me know it was better to use CBR (constant bit rate) rather than VBR (variable bit rate) to compress the file.  That worked fine.  And the new file size is about 20% of the original.  After another run through to increase the video size, I think I've finally got this working.  And the Windows Media File Editor utility is *extremely* easy to use to trim the ends of the files.

So without a lot of pain, I've learned something new this week, which might actually come in handy at home, too.  My husband is attaching a video camera to his motorcycle when he takes it to the track and will be capturing a bunch of video.  Maybe I can turn those into cool little movies, by using Windows Movie Maker.  Just call me Anandi Ford Coppola.  :)

So now my computer is tied up compressing a 1.3 GB file.  It uses 98% of the CPU so I can't use it while it's doing this.  Perhaps I'll use my laptop to work from home tomorrow and use Remote Desktop to continue compressing the training files on my work machine.

It sure is quiet out there.  Is anyone still reading my blog?

Reading, and taking notes! I'm still trying to figure out where you found that Media Encoder document for download in your last article. What a great find! (^_^)

Anandi, we're still reading your blog and we're grateful for your efforts to get the recordings to us in a more compact format.

Hee hee, my pathetic grubbing for comments worked! Thanks guys!

Blake - I found the article through MSN Search. I was just looking for simple docs on Encoder since it's a far more complex tool than I expected.

Carr - I'm not sure why VBR didn't work for me. Zhan found a few KB articles referencing that as a problem, but I couldn't find them when I was writing this post. Try searching on support.microsoft.com and you might?

Still reading, and just got back from vacation. I know that some devices (particularly my mp3 player) have problems with VBR audio, but for the most part it seems to work pretty well. I know that AV encoding/decoding/reencoding can be a nightmare though. It took me about 3 weeks to figure out how to convert divx encoded files to DVD compliant mpegs without any audio skew. Finally found one way to do it that only uses three different tools :) If you're ever looking at doing anything with video, check out www.videohelp.com though. It's really the premier codec KB out there.

I've also been too busy with the new 360 to keep up with much on the internet for the past few days.
