Anandi’s Thoughts

Random stuff (mostly) about working as a Program Manager at Microsoft
A Belated Happy New Year, Y'All

Hello again!  I celebrated the New Year in grand style, sick in bed for a whole week.  What a bummer.  I even missed a fun party at Nathalie's house.  Nathalie is our fabulous Release Manager, who keeps us all on track by managing the overall project schedule, running our weekly Leads status meeting, nagging us nicely about our outstanding work items, and working with the various groups around Microsoft to do what we need to do to release a product.  It takes a certain kind of skill set to be a good Release Manager, and Nathalie has that magical "it".

You might be interested in reading the Connect team's plans for RSS feeds.  Unfortunately it won't make it into the upcoming release, but they are working on it for a future version.  There's also an interesting post by Corey on what "feedback" really means to you, our customers.  Please go ahead and let him know your thoughts.  It can only help make the Connect site better for everyone!

One of my "personal improvement" projects is to scrounge up an extra machine so I can run MSS 2007 in my office.  Sad to say, I don't have one up and running.  My first project is to complete the pizza tutorial.  That should be interesting, since I don't know C# at all.  I guess that's something I'll pick up.

I'm taking a break from my degree program at UW this quarter, but next quarter I'd like to take the Data Structures class, so I need to brush up on my programming skills.  What I really need to do is review C++ now to get ready.  The course I took 8 years ago isn't exactly fresh in my mind, and my most recent programming experience is with Java.  Guess I had better brush up on those pointers and multiple inheritance, huh?  If you know of any decent online C++ tutorials, please let me know!

Don't know about any good tutorial sites on general C++ stuff, but there are some great articles on MSDN the thecodeproject.com for specific topics (if you can find them). As for data structures, I still have a copy of a book called "Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in C++" by Mark Weiss on my bookshelf here, and it's one of the few useful textbooks that I've held onto. On the plus side though, with more modern development environments (i.e. .net) you don't need to know the algorithms for balancing a B-Tree or creating a doubly linked list...but it does help sometimes.

I saw the RSS item on the connect team's blog, and actually emailed them with a few suggestions. Glad to see that it's under consideration, and I can see why the passport authentication was a problem for the feed. Maybe there needs to be a standard for secured RSS proposed (unless there already is one of course)?
