Is this behavior is depend only by the CF. version?

As I can see this behavior only at WM6 devices and not at WM5, running the same application..

Just check as i only get this error while using code in WM6.....it works fine with WM5

In response to several suggestions that this only occurs on WM6 (and that WM5 and earlier are fine), the answer seems to be from my tests that <i>all</i> platforms are capable of producing this error, but WM6 is more likely to produce the error that earlier platforms.

Tony, The source is posted now.

Alfred, IIS has been observed to generate these empty packets in some scenarios, but I can't yet accurately predict which scenarios those are. One tip to try though: ignoring client certificates (as opposed to requesting or requiring them) has been suggested by a customer as a way to keep IIS from generating them. This hasn't been verified yet though.

Do we have any idea how long a patch for .NET Compact Framework is down the road? We rely on an application that uses this code to sync many mobile phones, and all new phones are shipping with WM6 now and even our WM5 phones that get updated are dying off now. Becoming a pretty big problem for our institution.

At the moment, the only planned fixes for this will be released with 3.5 SP1 and any subsequent version. No hotfix is scheduled, but those plans may change with sufficient customer need.

Where do we make the requests for a hotfix then? I am sure I have this problem too but it is not constant. I will definately confirm this but if I find it is where can I submit my vote for a fix?

i also encountered this problem almost a year ago and couldn't find a solution. 4 months later i tested my app on a different server and did not experience that problem again.

Hi, I have tested 2 version of the WM6 Emulator, in the old one I have the same bug, but with the newest the problem is gone... But now I'm testing a PDA (Workabout Pro PSION) and it has the same problem... does anybody know a patch for WM6 that can solve the problem? (DarkChuky@hotmail.com). I'm not sure if it's the same problem but in our case it is device specific. And it is an uncatchable exception. We target vanilla 5.0 devices so that means cf 1.0 sp3 (or whatever it is). Installing the CF 2.0 or 3.5 update seems to fix the problem on the devices in question.

To circumvent this you can use stunnel on the server side with option

options = DONT_INSERT_EMPTY_FRAGMENTS

in the config. helped me until a CF solution is available.

Is this only applicable to HTTPS ?

I seem to get the exception quite randomly on the .NET CF 2.0 SP2 front end that consumes

webservices hosted on Tomcat server(HTTP).

Any ideas ?

I've just faced this problem on CF 1.1, on Psion WorkaboutPro with WinCE4.2.

It's interesting that ALL OTHER WebServices works fine.

only difference is that I'm sending my own class (object) as input parameter.

Makes me crazy :(

Remember that analogously to every other hotfix you can ask to Technical Support about whatever Microsoft’s product, you should install it only if you're sure it’s for the problem you're being affected by. This is because a hotfix is meant to address a specific issue and has been tested precisely for that: it didn't go through the whole regression testing that it's usually done when packaging many hotfixes into a Service Pack. So, you don’t have to install this hotfix if you’re not interested on Web Services over SSL (sending empty packets).

This is all well and good producing a fix for .NET CF 2.0/3.0/3.5 but what about all of the devices stuck with CF 1.0/1.1 ?

We have hundreds of deployed embedded devices in Europe running CE4.2 and CF 1.0 all of which use Web Services for various purposes.

We have no scope to upgrade the OS image to include a new CF version as its stored in a ROM and is not practical to upgrade, however our deployed applications can be upgraded as they are stored in flash memory. If MS released a patched DLL or even the patched source code of the HttpWebRequest class for older CF versions we could modify our applications and fix this issue.

Hi from Venezuela, and sorry for my bad english, i have the same problem with my ppc, using gprs sometimes the ppc works good and sometime throw the error "Unable to read data from the transport connection", also, i stop the apache tomcat server and the ppc throw the error, like i said before, sometime work and sometime not, somebody help me, there is a fix or something im using( wm6.0, net3.5, .net 2008 - server is windows xp pro - apache tomcat web services Java)
