Why does my TiVo contain Apple's Bonjour network code?

My HD TiVo finally upgraded to 6.3a last night - at long last I get Folders. However, I noticed at the end of the System Info page some new text saying "This product contains Apple Computer Inc's Bonjour network discovery protocol. Source code for the Bonjour software is available at"...

WTF? My TiVo has no network port, and (without hacking it) no ability to connect via its USB port. Even if it could, Bonjour wouldn't do me any good: I run a Windows domain at home, so UPNP would be a far better choice for network discovery. Or SMB.

I can dream that this is a prelude to the Home Media Option, or TiVo To Go, or some other feature that DirectTV have decided they won't offer us satellite TiVo users.

Bonjour works on Windows, too.

The TV cable can do networking.  If you plug into a TV cable that is when the networking part must become operable.

The set top box I have seems to download its OS when reset and regularly gets the program guide from the network.

DirectTV could look like a network to the box.

It's for service discovery, not network discovery. So no, UPnP would not be a better choice. TiVo uses it to find and talk to other TiVos on the network.

Thanks Rosyna. But the fact I cannot physically connect a network to my TiVo still makes this a mystery to me. If it could somehow speak to other TiVos I'd buy another HR10-250 in a flash.

There is an announcement on the DirecTV web site that starting in early 2008 they will begin offering remote scheduling over the web.
