Hardware for the WindowsCE based media player

Several people have been asking, "Where can I obtain that nifty little embedded box you used to build the WindowsCE based media player?"  Look no further as I've put together the details on the box below:

The box is called the "eBox" and can be obtained as a part of the eBox II Starter Kit.  If you would like to purchase one for yourself, please e-mail: info@icoptech.com .

Here are the specs of the box itself:

Processor: Vortex86 200MHz
RAM: 128 MB
Network: 10/100 Mbps
Video: VGA output

Audio: Stereo Audio
Ports: Serial, Parallel, USB, PS/2

The box comes with an IDE cable which you can use to connect a notebook hard drive.  I used a 60GB notebook hard drive for the media player box and attached it using the built-in mounting braces located on the under side of the board.

Finally, I used a TRENDware USB Bluetooth Dongle which is supported with WindowsCE.

The Speech Engine is from a company called ScanSoft [http://scansoft.com/].

WindowsCE ships with SAPI [the Speech API] but does not include any speech engines. You should be able to use any SAPI compliant Speech Engine that is supported on the hardware platform [x86 vs. ARM, etc.]

The great thing about SAPI is that it standardizes the interface between your application and the speech infrastructure. This enables you to swap in/out speech engines or even voices [i.e. male/female] by just setting the appropriate registry keys.

Good luck!

Is there any other small units that runs fine on CE5.0? That one's a tad expencive for a hobby project. And I don't need the enclosure etc. Like a mini-itx board, only smaller, and fanless.

Does the gumstix support CE5.0 ?

Cool thanks for that link, Where do you download the Windows CE 5 stuff that you used? I keep trying to type what I am hearing in the video but don't think I am correct.

Thanks!

I wonder if you could use this: It already runs CE5 and at $299 not a bad deal! http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=30767&category=main

Hi Anil!

I know this may not be the right place to ask. But I was wondering, do you think we will see an improved support for Bluetooth protocols in Windows Vista or maybe even for XP in SP3? For instance, the current support available in XP SP2 features a somewhat basic setup. If you install the hardware manufacturer's drivers you get support for say Headsets, printers, Mices, keyboards and even AV Services. The cool think I enjoy doing is using a voice app like Skype or MSN Messenger on my PC and walking around in my place here talking with my friends using my bluetooth headset. Even though the quality leaves you wondering why it's so bad, it's still very cool!

Nice work on the mediabox. I hope we will see more cool stuff you can do with bluetooth on Channel9. Maybe your car is next?
