Office Online -- now powered by AP!

Last week a new AP-based version of Office Online went live. 100% of assistance queries, TOC, and feedback are now handled by AP. You can check it out by using Office Online help in Office 2003 or by searching at http://office.microsoft.com.

What's better about it? The most obvious thing is performance--I think you'll be very pleased with the immediate response you now get--most customers have reported a huge performance improvement. Perhaps less obvious, but no less important is search relevance, which should start out great and get better over time based on user feedback.

OK I'm going to ask the obvious question :-)
Why is it so fast now? Seems to be much much faster than the rest of the MS web. Very Impressive.

Or is it just better sever hardware?
What's the technique here that makes it faster? And do you see non-MS authors able to use this eventually?

What is the file extension for MAML? Is it AML?

AML (Assistance Markup Language) formerly named MAML is a XML format. IT's not a file extension und not public at this stage.

The Assistance Platform client (HelpPane.exe) is a new Help engine designed for Windows Vista. It is not compatible with any previous versions of Windows. The Assistance Platform client is required to display Help files with the .H1S file name extension. This file includes all images etc. put together by XSLT.

Microsoft is rethinking its strategy with regard to Windows Vista Help.

I just loaded the newest version of XP Office--now documents with some graphics (like letterheads) won't open.  They show .pub extension now.  How do I open these files?
