Help Team User Group Rounds Kick-off in L.A.

As you may have seen or heard by now, there is a new team dedicated to improving the help experience in Visual Studio.  If you already know that then hopefully you also know that we realize that including you in the planning process is important!  I will begin talking with various user groups on the west coast starting later this month.  I will find a way to work with other user groups around the country as well, but I'm starting off with the fine developers nearby.  I will be in L.A. on March 20th at the Micrsoft offices downtown at 7pm to talk with the L.A. .NET Users group. User group members will need to RSVP to me in order to attend.

Other planned stops (dates, places TBD):

  • San Jose, CA
  • Portland, OR
  • Burnaby, BC
  • Vancouver, BC
  • Washington State:
    • Bellevue
    • Bellingham
    • Olympia
    • Redmond
    • Spokane

Hi April, The Help MVPs are looking forward to the sessions in Seattle next month during the MVP Summit. We hope you will also be thinking about ordinary UA/techref Help as you go. Companies desperately need a new help API they can use for their applications. At the moment MS have left us with absolutely no where to go. CHM does the job, but its inflexible and does not support unicode. H2 is basically only for  VS. AP's not a go. Both H2 and AP were announced as the next help system for developers but it all came to nothing.

But hey I'm preaching to the converted. The idea of having a help system and API writen in a modern lanugae such as C# is very exciting. And actually dumping InfoTech and going for maybe ZIP containers. Wow. If you did just that ... a lot of developers would be smiling.

Keep up the good work. Good luck with the HelpX sessions.

Rob

Hi April - I hope your stop in Portland is for the User Assistance conference March 16-20. You'll find a few of us Help MVPs there that week, and we usually have the opportunity to meet with MS at that time.

Otherwise, see you at the Summit. Rgds, Dana

Hi Rob and Dana!

No, I won't be at the UA conference, but there is a dev from the new help team that will be there - David Wright.  We'll both see you here for the summit!

Rob, I think you'll be happy to hear our latest thinking!  See you in April -

April

Hi April,

I'll be at WritersUA sharing a presentation platform with David Wright, whom I met at the Summit last year, and delivering another presentation in the Peer Showcase. Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to also get to this year's MVP Summit, coupled with the fact that I've recently accepted a Technical Writer position with Opera Software ASA in Oslo, Norway which I'll be starting in April.

Hopefully David and other members of the new Help Team will share something with us at WritersUA. In the meantime, I do look forward to someday meeting you, and the other members of the Windows Help Team.

Kind regards,

Frank M. Palinkas

April, it's been a long time since all January's stuff about a new DevDiv help team.

Please tell us it's all under-way and still going to happen...
