Wonder no more: Bobby Woolf, co-author of Enterprise Application Integration Patterns, and WebSphere SOA and J2EE Consultant at IBM, wrote an article where you can read all about it.
More technically this interesting article questions the legitimacy of an ESB as the foundation of a Service Oriented Architecture. A catchy image that he is using is that an ESB implementation without a comprehensive SOA strategy is like human appendix: useless.
