Inside SQL Server Replication

Introduction

I am a developer at Microsoft working on SQL Server Replication technology.  In particular, I work on replication with heterogeneous sources like Oracle.  I hope to post on SQL Server replication as well as how to integrate other database systems with SQL Server.

This is interesting. Do you plan on introducing any new forms of replication in future versions of SQL? I ask, because we currently use a custom method of bi-directional replication, kind of a spoke system, where all data is replicated to a central server and then back out to all the other offices.

The system you describe can be done with existing replication features in SQL Server 2000 (either a combination of merge or transactional with updating subscribers). In SQL Server 2005, we will be expanding the feature set with peer to peer replication as well as the heterogeneous (Oracle) replication. We do have some grander plans long term of course but the two feature sets I mentioned are the big new features for 2005.

Well we do use existing replication, but have to have fields on our database tables to help us identify the 'home' server so that the replication doesn't replicate forever.

Will the 'longer term grander plans' be interesting to us?

Yes, there are some things that may be of interest in this area. If you are on the SQL Server 2005 beta, you will be able to preview the features. If not, you'll have to wait until release (or at least closer). I'll check to see if I can post some more detailed information for you.
