Whilst the performance of my system is fairly robust, I have viewed the Event Log and found the following 2 Errors. Firstly under Media Center Scheduler:

"The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Media Center Scheduler ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Update Request with new Guide data caused an exception.."

And then under Media Center Guide:

"Event Info: TitleQuery: DoQuery Error

Process: DefaultDomain

Object Name: Microsoft.Ehome.Epg.Query.TitleQuery

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

These errors occur at least daily and if have a feeling it may have something to do with the way my setup, every so often, throughs it's towel in and doesn't record anything etc.

Any thoughts on how to get round this? I have already gone down the route of deleting the exisiting EPG and settings from the My Documents folder and whilst it is okay for a few days, it soon starts it's old tricks again.

I've also seen the same error as "hissingsid". My MCE 2005 machine is joined to an AD domain, and if the (single) domain controller can't be found, MCE is unable to download guide data and logs the event shown in hissingsid's comment.

I see the first error as mentioned by "hissingsid" atleast 2-3 times every other day in the event viewer. I would like to understand what is the problem here, if possible?

I get some of these errors once in a while but i can deal with it. the problem that im having is when im watching tv, specially recorded ones i get a clicked sound and then all the buttons on the remote wouldn't work even when i use the mouse. but the movie is still going without a problem... then that's the time i press ctrl alt del. then i end the program then i get this message:

App has generated an exception that couldn't be handled

please help me it's really annoying when i have to always pre ctrl alt del in the middle of the movie. i really want to use the remote because i want to fast forward all these commercials..

Hi Himanshu - You are getting a class not registered error on this system. Normally that can be solved by repairing/reinstalling Update Rollup 2 for Media Center 2005 and then repairing/reinstalling the latest update rollup you have installed (either KB908250 or KB912067). Can you please try this and see if it helps?

I was getting "unknown discovery service error:. Code 14" and finally figured out the problem -- my system clock was set to 2002 due to me having had to clear the BIOS after messing it up while installing a new hard drive. Apparently MCE gets very confused trying to look up program guide information from 4 years ago (understandably so). Once I set the time the guide downloaded without any problems.

I'm going to share what I've learned, maybe it will help some others. I'm using Windows Media Center, Vista Home Premium. To find the location of your guide data and what not, go here...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG

The current EPG entry will show you where your guide is actually located. Mine is in this directory:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\EPG\

Also, the registry entry shows you the URL for the guide download. Mine is here:

Now, here's where the fun comes in. I've been having problems since I installed Vista getting the Guide to update at all. All of my listings are empty. I finally was able to isolate the error, and this is what I'm finding. There is a "tracehelper" folder in the EPG folder mentioned above that shows you detailed logging in XML format. Here's what I'm seeing.

So it looks like the 16 and 17 hops are big trouble. When I ping them individually, the request times out.

The question is, what can I do about this? I'm sure my ISP (comcast) is going to say.. "not our issue". How do I communicate to MSFT that it is something for them to look into? Or is it a Level 3 problem?

Is there anyway I can somehow do an ftp or manual download of the guide data?

Can I somehow extend the Request Time out window so it will wait longer for a response?

I'm stuck, this seems to be the core of my issue. At the moment, I'm using stuff like TitanTv for channel listings, then jumping into Media Center to actually watch stuff. A royal pain in the butt.

By the way, I never had this problem before the Vista upgrade, so I'd be curious to know if any 2004/2005 MCE users could tell me what their URL is for the download. Maybe I can manually change the registry entry.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Hi JTHolland - Unfortunately, FTP and manual download of guide data are not supported in Media Center. I don't know of a way to extend the request timeout like you describe, but I'm not a networking expert either so that doesn't mean it isn't possible.

This does appear to be something networking-related as opposed to an issue within Media Center. However, I'm not sure what to suggest to try to narrow this down further. It might help to post a question on one of the public Microsoft newsgroups like Microsoft.Public.Windows.MediaCenter or a networking-specific newsgroup, and hopefully someone there will have better advice than I'm able to offer.

Error code 21 during epg update

Dear Aaron,

I am getting crazy with my media center (vista family premium) whose TV guide update has suddenly stopped working about 1 month ago. I now get an error code 21 each time I try to update the guide.

I have looked everywhere on the web, and could not find any reasonable solution until I find your blog.

I have tried to delete the EPG folder, switch off the guide, reboot, switch it on again, and update: same error.

Since I don't know what to do next, I copy-paste below the content of the tracehelper file generated during the last update attempt.

Note that 100% of the data seem to be transferred before a decompressing or securing file error occurs.

If you understand something, please help.

Hi Denis - The guide download workarounds that I know of are all posted in the Guide Download Errors section of the article at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/487537.aspx. If none of those are helpful to you, I'd suggest posting this question and a snippet from your TraceHelper file at one of the following locations and hopefully someone there will be able to help suggest possible workarounds:

I’m having a nightmare trying to download the MCE2005 TV Guide in both Guide Setup and Guide Refresh I get an Internet Connection Failure message with (Code 4). This used to work fine until 2 weeks ago, I havn’t changed anything on my PC, I’ve tried disabling Firewalls, Spybot and AVG Anti Virus - still comes up with same error. I’m using Netgear Wireless Router and have no other connectivity problems with any other software. The time and date are synched correctly. Any Help would be really really appreciated as I’ve been two weeks without my guide and thinking about scrapping all together and getting a PVR instead !

Hi Brianc8 - The workarounds I know of for guide download issues are all listed in the Guide Download Errors section of the blog article at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/487537.aspx. If none of those help, you may want to try to contact technical support for your computer manufacturer for more detailed troubleshooting assistance or post a question at one of the following locations:

I fixed Code 24 by looking in the tracehelper (thanks jtholland) and found registry access denied errors. renamed the offending registry key, restarted Media centre and all went through OK.
