PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FULL-TIME POSITIONS

"You come in every morning and check up on what you've built the night before, see if you've broken anything, or if you've got any bugs to take care of. Right now I'm working on three different design features, so I've got maybe three status meetings a week to check in with everybody--the testers, the developers, the Program Managers, and together we figure out what we need to do. The core of my job is designing new features and figuring out how to get them to work. I loved that you could pursue an idea seriously in college and have other people around to talk to about it. I wanted to stay in a place like that. And Microsoft turned out to be that place."

Qualifications: A BA/BS or a graduate degree in computer science or related technical discipline. Strong coding skills, proficiency in C/C++, vision, and a passion for technical excellence.

It’s been a long time since I last blogged and so much has happened.  James has moved on and we are expecting a new manager in the next couple of weeks – more on that later.  We have a new recruiter on board – Catherine Summers (I’ll get her to introduce herself in the next couple of days).

We are recruiting like crazy and that’s one of the reasons I haven’t been able to blog as much as I’d like (I know not a very good reason).  I had a look at Gretchen’s Jobsblog site today and I’ve noticed that they have a number of new people contributing to the blog – I’m going to have to get Finuala and Catherine on board to share some of their recruiting expertise.

For recent university and MBA grads we’ve introduced a new Program – MACH – Microsoft Academy of College Hires.

What is Microsoft Academic College Hires (MACH)?

MACH is an accelerated career development program designed to recruit and hire high-potential new graduates from around the world, and cultivate them as passionate, innovative talent for the Microsoft Sales, Marketing and Services Group (SMSG).

This holistic program provides top graduates with the practical skills and business acumen they need to quickly take on active SMSG roles at Microsoft. Each year, SMSG invites a select group of undergraduate and MBA hires to participate in a two-year “on-boarding” development program.  Candidates are hired into full-time positions throughout the company and receive supplemental MACH training and mentoring to help them realize their full potential.

MACH Hires/Candidates Profile

Hired directly from a higher academic institution who has recently earned an Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree. Candidates for the MACH program should have graduated within the past year and should have less then five years of “real world” experience, including internships.

We have recently hired 4 MACH employees for ANZ and we expect to be recruiting more in November.  We have a position for an inside account manager based in Victoria.  If you’re interested or would like more information apply directly through gr8hire@microsoft.com or our careers site.

We expect to be recruiting a number of new positions over the next couple of months so keep an eye on our careers site and on my blog as I’ll be posting more about our open positions in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks JJ [:D][:)]

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FULL-TIME POSITIONS

Software Design Engineer

Writes product code and solves complex problems. Proficient in C/C++.

Software Design Engineer in Test

Creates tools to test and improve products. Proficient in C/C++.

So what exactly is it? A Software Design Engineer in Test is a developer who designs, develops, and maintains automation systems-often expandable suites containing multiple automation programs-to be used by the development and test teams. They are responsible for utilizing innovative test technologies to develop a product's testing strategy, and for facilitating the creation and execution of automated test suites across a diverse set of technologies. They look at source code for potential problems using Microsoft internal tools. They also reproduce, debug, and isolate problems, and verify fixes.

Qualifications: A BA/BS or graduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related technical discipline. Strong coding skills, proficiency in C/C++, Visual Basic experience, and a relentless attention to detail.

There are multiple positions open, so please share the information with someone as good as you are.

All positions are at our corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington, USA. We do require functional level English language skills, written and spoken.

Hello All,

It’s some time since I last blogged – work and life in general have been crazy.

Steve and I purchased a home a few weeks ago which is by far the most exciting news that I have to share with you – well for me anyhow.  We move in a couple of weeks – hopefully we’ll be in before Easter.

It’s a great place in Drummoyne a few streets back from the famous “Bay Run”.

On the work front it’s also been busy we’ve been hiring some fantastic people across the business.

We’ve got some great positions becoming available over the next few months so I encourage you to watch this space as well as our careers site for further information - I would also encourage you to ask questions about the positions that you’re interested in.

I’m going to be recruiting a number of consultants across Australia over the next 12 months.  I’ll be looking for consultants with experience in Exchange, SMS & MOM, platforms (Windows server technology) SQL Developers and .NET Architects.

Consultants: Consultants provide leadership and guidance in the development and delivery of Microsoft Solutions.  They work directly with customers and partners to scope, design and build applications that utilise new and emergent technology.

I’ll be looking for Pre-Sales (Account & Product) and Senior Support Specialists with experience in the above technologies as well.

Account Technology Specialists: The Account Technology Specialist works as part of the Enterprise Sales team.  This team is responsible for driving strategic sales within our commercial accounts.

Support Professionals: Support professionals deliver high level technical support to Microsoft Customers and effectively resolve reported technical issues electronically, via telephone or onsite.

It’s important to note that we are interested in talking to candidates outside of Australia for full time positions (we even offer full relocation in some cases) – if you’ve got family or friends with experience in any of the roles that I blog about or that are posted on the careers site encourage them to apply.

I’ll also be recruiting a number of Interns for our Marketing team, if you’re a recent graduate (Marketing or Communications) with less than one year’s full time experience and your interested in opportunities at Microsoft then send your CV now.

Thanks JJ

A couple of people have asked if we do product development in Australia.  The answer to this question is; yes but only a small amount and not like that done in the US or India.  Microsoft Australia has a Software Development Centre (SDC).  The SDC is a small team of developers operating out of our Sydney office

MS WEB: The SDC is a rapid software development facility for customer and partner projects. Its aim is to focus and streamline the critical aspects of developing software solutions.

We also recruit a number of positions that require a strong Development background as one of the key requirements i.e.

  • Account & Product Technology Specialists
  • Development Consultants
  • Support Engineers

For those interested in Intern positions we recruit an intern for the Development Centre annually – keep an eye on the Microsoft web.

Thanks JJ

After a meeting I had with our MVP’s yesterday (more to follow on that) I’ve decided that I’m going to blog when we have a new technical vacancy.

I’m not going to post the job description (you can already see that on our careers site) I’m going to give you more details on what it is we are look for when recruiting that particular role.  I’d like to include an interview with a Microsoft employee that is already in a similar role (thinking aloud) that includes details of their background, the team, and what it’s like working for Microsoft.

So watch this space….  Thanks JJ
