Although the bar where you drink beer and then climb has closed its doors, the bar where you drink and perform archery continues to serve the masses in Beijing. In the never ending stream of new theme restaurant/bars, a restaurant that serves food in pitch black darkness opened up in Beijing last week on December 23rd.

via Spluch:

The first dark restaurant in Asia is officially opened on the 23 December 2006. This restaurant, located in Beijing, China, has its interior painted completely in black. Customers are greeted by a brightly lit entrance hall and will be escorted by waiters wearing night vision goggles into the pitch dark dining room to help them find their seats. Flashlights, mobile phones and even luminous watches are prohibited while in this area.

The meal will be taken in this environment with the complete loss of vision. By starving one’s sense, your other senses are stimulated to full alert – all so the theory goes – and your food will taste like it’s never tasted before.

Since then, the restaurant concept has been subsequently replicated elsewhere, including Paris, Berlin, London and multiple cities in Canada, United States, Russia and Australia. The one located in Beijing, China is the latest addition.

They have got to be kidding? How can BeijingRen exist without their mobile phones and bright shiny watch faces ! This may work in European and North American cities but eating without a mobile phone is like KTV without the TV.

That said, in my favorite lunch place called the "Hard Drive" behind our building, I have found so many bugs in my food that I have asked them to please remove the bugs before they serve it to me. I know there are still bugs somewhere but not seeing them lets me hold on to the illusion of purity so that I can continue eating there.

The Chinese story is here.
