CAPICOM support on Windows Server 2008

  • Comments 12

Hi all, welcome back,

If you remember all the confusion there was regarding CAPICOM support on Vista, now everything seems much clearer on Windows Server 2008. Our documentation team has done its homework, as we can see in CAPICOM Reference:

"CAPICOM is available for use in the following operating systems: Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. It may be altered or unavailable in subsequent versions. Instead, use the .NET Framework to implement security features."

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Alex (Alejandro Campos Magencio)

  • CAPICOM reference is missing Windows Server 2003 in the list of supported OS, but CAPICOM is also supported on that version of Windows.

  • What about Server 2008 64-bit?

  • Hi Paul,

There is no 64bit version of CAPICOM, but 32bit version should work with 32bit applications in 64bit machines...

    Cheers,

    Alex

  • Will it ever be ported to Server 2008 64-bit?

  • No, there won't be 64bit version of CAPICOM. You can only use the currently available 32bit version.

  • Hi,

I am using CAPICOM activeX control and javascript for text singing. The user selects a certificate from user store to sign some text in the form before post. In code behind, I verify the signature.

Since there will be no 64-bit version of CAPICOM, how can I accomplish this from 64-bit IE? (I have no control over clients and can't make them use the 32-bit version of IE).

Other teqniques and why they fail...

Accessing certificates is not possible with Silverlight since only a subset of the framework is available. However, using a ClickOnce windows form application it can be achieved but integration with ASP.NET is limited...

Any idea how to enable client side signing using certificates?

    /Lars Gunnar

  • You may develop an ActiveX which uses CryptoAPI. CAPICOM is just a wrapper of CryptoAPI after all. You may also develop the ActiveX with .NET.

  • Is Capicom available in SQL server 2000?

  • I'm sorry, I know nothing about SQL Server, but as far as I know it doesn't.

  • Hi,till now we were using CAPICOM 32 bit & now our application is migrated to Windows 2008 server 54 bit because of that we are no longer able to use CAPICOM.

Would be thankful if you can help out , by guideing us  about how to proceed further in .net.

Would appereciate if u can also provide some sample for the same.]
