Windows 7 Developer Guide - updated

  • Comments 4

eek! If you missed it in October, they just updated the Windows 7 Developer Guide last week.

The themes? Solid Foundation, Richer Application Experiences, The Best of Windows and the Web.
The abstract:

Building applications that are easy to use, visually appealing, and offer high performance is a challenge that developers face every day. Innovative applications can greatly improve the user experience, empowering companies to differentiate their services and solutions. However, developers are increasingly asked to do more in less time, while also optimizing the power and performance requirements of their applications.
The Windows 7 platform makes it easy for developers to create engaging, user-friendly applications by providing familiar tools and rich development features that allow them to take advantage of the latest PC capabilities.

Happy Reading! Oh, and get yourself a beta dvd when you can.

  • Anyone here use Vista?   Do you really think MS should be giving out tips on how to develop code?

  • Boe_D, feel free to contact me if you are running into a nagging issue on Vista. I am biased :) but I run Vista exclusively at home, work and I've been unscathed. From buddies running Windows 7, they are very excited. I am looking forward to the beta.

  • Thanks - things I'd love for them to fix with Vista (yes, I have 2 GIgs of ram 3 GHz Core 2 processor, plenty of free space, a fast hard drive, the latest drivers for my controller, video, chipset, nic etc, SP1 and all subsequent updates).  Tried Intel and broadcom nics.

Slow network throughput when transferring large files 1- 10 GB with the server, slow network throughput when transferring folders with hundreds of files in large folders 1-120 GB.   Our server is Windows 2003 x64 R2 with all patches available - no performance issues with XP SP2 or SP3.

Clients really miss the up folder icon in explorer.

I really miss right clicking on network properties and being able to get to my ipconfiguration and other network settings.

Clients complain about slow boot time.  They say it feels sluggish.   These are on clean installs - no crapware.  I've also had to upgrade clients who bought home PCs to XP as well as they said it was too slow - all were very happy with the same PCs when I upgraded them to XP.

I've had to switch all my clients back to XP and I don't blame them.   I use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop OS at home as Vista seems sluggish to me as well.

  • I would like to say although I dislike the performance of Vista, I have never had the stability issues so many people post about.   Vista has been very stable for me but then again so has XP - I think I've had XP crash on me about once in the last 3 years and I have about 40 apps installed on my PC so I think both are very stable OS's.
