PhoneGap now fully supports Windows Phone

Back in September, Microsoft joined Nitobi to announce a Beta of PhoneGap support for Windows Phone Mango, and at the same time committed to continue working with the PhoneGap Open Source project community to help bring full support.

PhoneGap by Nitobi is an open source mobile framework that enables developers to build applications targeting multiple platforms, by using standard web technologies (HTML5, CSS and JavaScript). This release extends the cross-platform capabilities of PhoneGap, giving more choices to developers in need of a programming environment allowing them to easily deliver the same mobile experience to their users across the various existing and prominent mobile operating systems.

In addition to being able to leverage their HTML5 and Javascript skills to target Windows Phone, developers can now enjoy a selection of PhoneGap Plugins that support social networks and a solid integration into Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone. The plugins are:

Facebook JS SDK
Twitter/LinkedIn/WindowsLive status retriever
Bing Maps Launcher
LiveTile Update

New at TechDays 2012 is the Entrepreneur Track: a full day to learn from best practices in the industry, meet the owners of successful startups and learn from their experiences as an IT entrepreneur.

This track is organized in close collaboration with the Microsoft Innovation Centers – the MICs are supporting entrepreneurs and startups to boost their IT projects into a successful business enterprises.

Azure Spotlight: Numeri’zik Robot Stream Goes Cloudy

Numeri’zik is a Belgian startup company that is involved in the digitization of media and new ways of communication. They are a member of the Microsoft BizSpark program, through which they have access to Microsoft software, support and a worldwide ecosystem of peers and partners.

Companies need to communicate to their employees about internal events, organizational changes, HR-related announcements, etc. Often email or other electronic communication is not appropriate and a more personal approach is needed. However, bringing all employees together in one physical location may not always be possible for different reasons.

Numeri’zik has built the Robot Stream application, which provides companies and institutions with an Enterprise Radio that gives them an innovative, fun and informal way to communicate with their employees. Through Robot Stream, you can integrate information messages in a music stream and target them at all or specific groups of employees, regardless of their location. Whether it’s in the coffee corner, during lunch in the cafeteria, on the PC or smartphone, you can reach anyone, anywhere in the organization.

With support from the Microsoft Innovation Center in Mons, Numeri’zik has developed the Robot Stream solution using Microsoft’s Cloud Computing platform. The streaming server is hosted in Windows Azure and which can communicate with an on-premise Robot Stream appliance (NumeriBox).

By leveraging Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Numeri’zik can offer its customers a solution that is highly available without having to invest in and manage a server infrastructure. At the same time, as the number of Robot Stream users fluctuates the platform can flexibly scale up or down, optimizing the operational cost.

The TechDays developer focus we have is make sure developers get a head-start on the platform and tools such as the next generation of Visual Studio Tools and Languages, ALM, Cloud, Web and Mobile as well as learning how to build applications that leverage cloud services and target multiple devices.

New Windows Azure Site and Features Available Today

Today we released the new Windows Azure Website with improved billing, management and SQL Azure capabilities. The site is in English today with localized versions planned to roll out next year

A highlight of the new features include:

Implementation of “Spending caps” where you can eliminate the risk of being charged by setting a €0 cap or reduce risk of large bills from unexpected usage by setting a higher cap and receiving alerts as they approach the cap.
SQL Azure database size increased from 50GB to 150GB and lowered prices
SQL Azure also has a new sharding feature along with SQL Azure Federation that enables you to build applications that are virtually unlimited in size
Open Source Experience with an updated Java SDK, a new SDK for Node.js that makes Windows Azure a first-class environment and new limited preview of Hadoop on Windows Azure
Simplified billing/reporting experience that integrates directly into the Management Portal
ISO 27001 complaint (public certification coming next month)

Today we are simplifying the development experience on Windows Azure with three updates—a new version of the Windows Azure SDK, a new Windows Azure HPC Scheduler SDK, and an updated Windows Azure Platform Training Kit. Whether you are already using Windows Azure or looking for the right moment to get started, these updates make it easier than ever to build applications on Windows Azure.

Highlights:

Windows Azure SDK (November 2011)—Multiple updates to the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio 2010 that simplify development, deployment, and management on Windows Azure. The full Windows Azure SDK can be downloaded via the Web Platform installer here.
Windows Azure HPC Scheduler SDK— Works in conjunction with the Windows Azure SDK and includes modules and features to author high performance computing (HPC) applications that use large amounts of compute resources in parallel to complete work. The SDK is available here for download.

If you’re coming by train: the Braine l’Alleud train station is very well connected with major cities in Belgium:

Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview Training Kit released

New Windows Azure SDK 1.5, Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010

I am happy to announce the availability of the Windows Azure SDK 1.5 and Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. You can download the tools here using the Web Platform Installer. All three of these releases are aimed at simplifying development, deployment, and management on the Windows Azure platform.

The Windows Azure SDK includes the following new features:

Re-architected emulator enabling higher fidelity between local & cloud developments & deployments.
Many fundamental improvements (performance of emulator and deployment, assembly/package validation before deployment)
Support for uploading service certificates in csupload.exe and a new tool csencrypt.exe to help manage remote desktop encryption passwords.
Many enhancements and fixes to Windows Azure SDK 1.4.

Also available are several new enhancements in Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio for developing & deploying cloud applications. These enhancements include:

Add Windows Azure Deployment project from Web Application project.
Profile applications running in Windows Azure.
Create ASP.NET MVC3 Web Roles.

Microsoft Patterns & Practices: A Guide to Claims-Based Identity and Access Control - 2nd Edition

Imagine a world where you don't have to worry about authentication. Imagine instead that all requests to your application already include the information you need to make access control decisions and to personalize the application for the user.

In this world, your applications can trust another system component to securely provide user information, such as the user's name or email address, a manager's email address, or even a purchasing authorization limit. The user's information always arrives in the same simple format, regardless of the authentication mechanism, whether it's Microsoft® Windows® integrated authentication, forms-based authentication in a web browser, an X.509 client certificate, or something more exotic. Even if someone in charge of your company's security policy changes how users authenticate, you still get the information, and it's always in the same format. This is the utopia of claims-based identity that A Guide to Claims-Based Identity and Access Control describes.

This is the second edition of this popular guide. It has been extensively updated to include new features and changes to the underlying technologies; and extends the coverage to encompass Windows Azure® Access Control Service, REST-based service authentication, and the use of claims-based authentication in Microsoft SharePoint® 2010. As you'll see, claims provide an innovative approach for building all types of applications that must authenticate and authorize users.

This edition also has a set of associated Hands-on-Labs that will help you to better understand the way that the example application works, how you can extend it with additional functionality, and how you can implement some of the advanced scenarios described in the guide.

An Introduction to Claims explains what a claim is and provides general rules on what makes good claims and how to incorporate them into your application. It's probably a good idea that you read this chapter before you move on to the scenarios.

Claims-Based Architectures shows you how to use claims with browser-based applications and smart client applications. In particular, the chapter focuses on how to implement single sign-on for your users, whether they are on an intranet or an extranet. This chapter is optional. You don't need to read it before you proceed to the scenarios.

Claims-Based Single Sign-On for the Web and Windows Azure is the starting point of the path that explores the implementation of single sign-on and federated identity. This chapter shows you how to implement single sign-on and single sign-out within a corporate intranet. Although this may be something that you can also implement with Integrated Windows Authentication, it is the first stop on the way to implementing more complex scenarios. It includes a section for Windows Azure™ technology platform that shows you how to move the claims-based application to the cloud.

Federated Identity for Web Applications shows how you can give your business partners access to your applications while maintaining the integrity of your corporate directory and theirs. In other words, your partners' employees can use their own corporate credentials to gain access to your applications.

Federated Identity with Windows Azure Access Control Service is the start of a parallel path that explores Windows Azure Access Control Service (ACS) in the context of single sign-on and federated identity. This chapter extends the scenarios described in the previous chapter to enable users to authenticate using social identity providers such as Google and Windows Live® network of Internet services.

Federated Identity with Multiple Partners is a variation of the federated identity scenario that shows you how to federate with partners who have no issuer of their own as well as those who do. It demonstrates how to use the ASP.NET MVC framework to create a claims-aware application.

Federated Identity with Multiple Partners and Windows Azure Access Control Service extends the scenarios described in the previous chapter to include ACS to give users additional choices for authentication that include social identity providers such as Google and Windows Live.

Claims Enabling Web Services is the first of a set of chapters that explore authentication for active clients rather than web browsers. This chapter shows you how to use the claims-based approach with web services, whereby a partner uses a smart client that communicates with identity providers and token issuers using SOAP-based services.

Securing REST Services shows how to use the claims-based approach with web services, whereby a partner uses a smart client that communicates with identity providers and token issuers using REST-based services.

Accessing REST Services from a Windows Phone Device shows how you can use claims-based techniques with Windows Phone™ wireless devices. It discusses the additional considerations that you must take into account when using claims-based authentication with mobile devices.

Claims-Based Single Sign-On for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 begins a path that explores how you can use claims-based identity techniques with Microsoft SharePoint 2010. This chapter shows how SharePoint web applications can use claims-based authentication with an external token issuer such as ADFS to enable access from both internal locations and externally over the web.

Federated Identity for SharePoint Applications extends the previous chapter to show how you can use federated identity techniques to enable users to authenticate using more than one identity provider and token issuer.

The samples illustrate all scenarios covered in the book. They provide a “single box” experience with minimal infrastructure requirements.

Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows Phone 7, iOS (iPhone & iPad) and Android.

I’m pleased to announce the release of the Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows Phone 7, Windows Azure Toolkit for Android and Windows Azure Toolkit for iOS (iPhone & iPad).

The purpose of these toolkits is to make it easier for mobile device developers – across multiple device platforms – to build applications that use Windows Azure to run services that power their device experiences. The toolkits include native libraries; project templates, sample applications, and documentation that make it easy for developers quickly get started build device applications that use Windows Azure.

What’s New?

You need an example?

We shipped the full source code of BabelCam, which is now available in the Windows Phone Marketplace. This mobile application allows you to take a picture of text and turn it into characters while letting you translate into a different language at the same time – great for trying to understand foreign restaurant menus! BabelCam was initially created as a sample for a presentation at MIX 11. Iit is a good demo is that it uses a number of services, including Windows Azure web and worker roles, Windows Azure storage (blobs, tables, and queues), the Microsoft Push Notification Service, Project Hawaii’s OCR Service, and the Bing Translator.

Windows Phone SDK 7.1 RC is available now and provides a ‘Go Live’ license that enables you to publish applications to the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Windows Phone SDK 7.1 RC is now live on the Download Center and the Marketplace is able to ingest WP7.5 apps. This release represents a large step for the platform, the Release Candidate (RC) build empowers the developer to not only develop their Windows Phone 7.5 apps, but it also includes a ‘Go Live’ license that empowers them to publish to Marketplace. The RC release continues to work fine with the pre-release builds of Zune and Windows Phone 7.5 that we released last month (build 7712). There have been no application platform changes between builds 7712 and 7720 of the OS, so devs should be fine continuing to use their devices with the WPSDK 7.1 until Windows Phone 7.5 is made available from their Mobile Operator.

This new release includes a lot of improvement. The emulator is using the RTM Build (7720) and the profiler have couple enhancements to make development and testing better. NuGet is now supported in the free Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone SKU and a completed Marketplace Test Kit enables you to test your app for certification on your machine. Moreover with the‘Go Live’ license included in the WPSDK 7.1 RC you can publish your apps to the Windows Phone Marketplace. If you built your app using the WPSDK 7.1 Beta 2 Refresh released last month, it should be as simple as a recompile and test.

Windows Phone SDK 7.1 “Beta 2 Refresh” Released

Yesterday, we released a refresh of the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 to our registered developers. The refresh carries two parts: we released an updated release of the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 (LKG-26) and the Mango OS (Build 7712).

First the tools,

With WPSDK RC about a month away, now is the time to update your app to Mango:

Get the tools: If you’re a registered App Hub developer and you haven’t already activated the invitation code, go activate it now and get the tools from Connect!
Evaluate the impact of Fast App Switching and other Mango capabilities to your app. There’s an ever-growing list of developer resources that the team is producing to help you get to your apps to Mango.
App Compat should be top of mind. Take a look at the short list of top potential app compat concerns that Larry has tracked down so that you’re not surprised when your users start installing Mango
Lastly, if you’ve even considered Mango I would greatly appreciate you taking 5 mins of your time to answer a short survey about updating to Mango

Then the phone,

The process to update your phone with build 7712 is pretty straight-forward: this build is not a RTM build – it’s still a pre-release build

Make a copy of the backup you took when you updated to the Mango Beta 2 pre-release (which I’m sure you did) and put it in a safe place, if it isn’t in one already
Note: Make sure that you copy this backup and put it somewhere else; uninstalling Zune will auto-delete any backups previously taken
Return to Connect.Microsoft.com (we’re using the same program you were invited to join last month) and download the freshly posted files, which includes a new Zune client and a new UpdateWP executable
Head to the Control Panel and uninstall the Beta 2 software (Zune client and UpdateWP) and tools (WPSDK) that you installed last month
Install the new software and tools that you just downloaded from Connect
Fire up the new Zune client beta (4.8.2134.0) to check for the new update
Zune will then update your phone from 7661 to 7712

As you probably have read in the press, the Brussels Region and Microsoft have decided to launch together a new Microsoft Innovation Center (or MIC) in Brussels with a focus on Cloud technologies. The goal of the MICs (there are about 110 in the world) is to sustain IT innovation and local IT startups projects at a regional level.

At Microsoft we are opening a new position for a Platform Strategy Advisor for the Windows Azure Platform. The preferred location for this position would be in Belgium. Below you can find an overview of the position:

The Windows Azure Platform is one of Microsoft’s strategic focus areas in cloud computing. This core service offering is delivering Platform-As-A-Service to support our partners and customers looking to transform their businesses through cloud computing. Join the Developer and Platform Evangelism (DPE) organization where you will support Cloud Service Vendors develop commercially available applications on the Windows Azure Platform.

The DPE team is looking for a Platform Strategy Advisor (PSA) who demonstrates 50% business development backed with 50% technical expertise and experience. As a member of the Azure ISV team, you will be responsible for identifying, driving, and closing Azure ISV opportunities in your region. You will help these partners bring their cloud applications to market by providing business model and architectural guidance and supporting them through their development and go-to-market activities. This position entails evangelizing the Windows Azure Platform to ISV partners, removing roadblocks to their deployment, and driving partner satisfaction.

In this role, you would be responsible for:

Developing and deployment of high quality, commercially available applications in your region
Ongoing evangelism of the Windows Azure Platform
Effective opportunity pipeline development and management with accurate forecasting
Creating Azure opportunity development plans compatible with overall Microsoft account management strategies
Ensuring synchronization between the Microsoft field teams to drive Azure’s presence in top ISV opportunities
Deployments of Azure applications that reinforce Microsoft’s business value, including TCO and ROI evidence
Delivering on sales readiness activities and metrics
Understanding the Microsoft field model and how best to integrate with the broader sales organization
Delivering ongoing market and competitive insights to the business group
