Hey all, the XP Embedded SP2 technology preview is now live and ready to download.  You can get the downloader tool and more information about XPE SP2 by clicking on the image below....

Download XPE SP2 Tech Preview Now!

I'm really excited to hear what everyone thinks about the new and updated features (I'll be posting more about some of the interesting new features in the near future).  Please send me an email at aaronste (at) microsoft (dot) com with any comments, questions, bug reports, positive or negative feedback.  Also, I worked with Mike Hall to write the downloader tool so I'd also be interested in any comments you have about that.

  • I have a problem with the downloader - I opened it too see how big the downloads were (i'm on slow dialup), and then decided not to go ahead with it after seeing how slow it was going.

So i got out of the program, but every time i start windows something using svchost is downloading the files - i can see the temp files for the downloads in action.

Anyway to stop this? It's choking my connection up.

    Thanks
  • I'm very sorry about this. I have fixed this issue in the RTM version of the XPEFFI tool, but for the tech preview it will not suspend the jobs when you cancel during installation. Here is what you can do to stop those jobs:

    1. Run net stop bits from a cmd prompt to stop background downloading

    -or-

    2. Rerun XPEFFI.exe and choose the smallest product - XP Embedded Disk 1 - and then start download again. This will clear out any previous jobs and only queue up the small parts of Disk 1. You will still have to let it finish Disk 1 if you don't already have it downloaded but that way it will not choke on those 100+ megabyte files like you are seeing currently.

I will try to post a small utility to delete the download cache automatically in the near future. Again I apologize...

    Thanks!
  • that's exactly what I ended up doing - downloading the doc pack - 9Mb

    No biggie :)

    Thanks
  • what do mean u can't stop the software???

Correct me if i am wrong but the software which can't be controlled and runs while hidind

can only be called a spyware.

why can't u provide all the info. in the form of text in this page instead forcing others to download??

  • The issue described is a bug in the tech preview version of the downloader, and it will be fixed for XPE SP2 RTM. I apologize for any inconvenience. I don't know that I would go so far as to call it spyware though, there is nothing malicious going on and no data is being uploaded from the machine back to Microsoft in any circumstances.

I'm also not sure what information you are referring to that you would like me to post in text form. If you can be more specific, I'd be happy to help out wherever I can.
