Detailed information about Update Rollup 2 setup

  • Its installing right at the moment. ill inform you off success or not. Do you still want the log files and if so how to contact you.

    Thanks (Fingers Crossed)

  • Hi Mark88 - If setup fails to install, I'd like to see the logs to see if I can figure anything out.  The blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/16/481689.aspx contains a contact email address you can use to send them to me.

  • :D thanks alot. Everything works fine now. Cant believe it was something as simple as NET. Framework :P. Anyway anywhere you can donate? Like paypal.

    Thanks

    Mark88

  • To summarize for anyone reading this blog post in the future, I had Mark88 send me log files and I found that Update Rollup 2 was failing to install because the .NET Framework 1.1 and 1.1 SP1 were not installed on the system.  Update Rollup 2 requires both of these be installed before it will install.  You can find these packages at the following locations:

  • Hi there,

When I run MCE R2 the only options I have are for My Pictures, More Programs and Settings. That's it!

No access to Mt TV, My DVD's, or anything else at all!

Please can someone shed some light on this?

I tried re-installing Media Center from the Media Center update section but no joy.

    Hyalp!

  • Hi Alstewart73 - Were the TV and DVD options available on your system prior to upgrading to Update Rollup 2?

For the TV menu - it is possible that your tuner is not compatible with Update Rollup 2 or that you need to re-run TV setup.  I'd suggest trying TV setup again, and if that does not report a tuner, try to update your tuner driver to see if that helps.  If none of those help, you can evaluate the compatibility of your tuner with the Media Center Diagnostics Kit that you can download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ce06d6a7-de56-4d82-bf5f-6f6e1296a934&DisplayLang=en.

For the DVD menu - the My DVDs menu only appears in Media Center if you have a DVD changer installed or you have changed the registry using a tool like TweakMce.  You can download a version of TweakMce for Update Rollup 2 at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=3400190A-511A-4A3A-9B89-524511A76F58&displaylang=en, and there is an option in there to enable the My DVDs menu.

  • Hello Aaron; I have Media Center with Rollup2.  Since December we have lost the ability to fast foward or rewind while watching live tv. All we can do is shuffle back 7 seconds at a time or shuffle forward 7 seconds at a time.  Have you heard of this problem? Do you know of a fix?

    Best regards

    Sean

  • Hi Sean - Do you know if this issue is with Media Center itself, or is it specific to the remote control buttons?  For example, can you use the on-screen FF/Rewind buttons with a mouse from within Media Center?  I've heard of a couple of issues where the remote buttons stopped working, and those were resolved by using steps like the ones at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/12/29/508147.aspx, but I can't tell for sure if this is similar to your scenario or not.

If that is not the issue, I haven't heard of anything like this before.  It might help to post a question on the Microsoft.Public.Windows.MediaCenter newsgroup to see if anyone there has any suggestions.

  • Aaron, advice for someone looking to remove rollup 2 that was preinstalled?  Thanks

  • I have this new computer since November, and then shortly after Christmas XP Media Center stop playing sound for Live TV, at the same time, Internet Explorer stopped playing midi on websites, then just last night, Window Media Player 11 stopped playing midi.  I hope someone can help me to get these sounds back.

    Thanks

  • Hi Parecon - I would like to understand better why you want to remove Update Rollup 2.  Can you describe why you need to?  It contains bug fixes and feature enhancements above and beyond Media Center 2005, including supporting Xbox 360 extender devices.  Plus it is required as a prerequisite before you will be able to install Windows Media Player 11.

In order to uninstall it, you can go to Add/Remove Programs, select the Show Updates check-box, then scroll to the bottom and uninstall the item named Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB900325).

  • I can't get the update to install. Every time I try it says: "This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005". I am running version 5.1.2700.2180.

  • Hi Mapitman - It sounds like one of the Media Center registry values might have gotten reset to an incorrect value on your system.  That would cause Update Rollup 2 setup to think that you are not running Media Center 2005 even if you really are.  Can you please try the following steps to see if they will resolve this issue on your system?

    1.  Click on the Start menu, choose Run, type cmd and click OK

    2.  Run this command:  reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center" /v Ident /t REG_SZ /d 3.0 /f

    3.  Try to run Update Rollup 2 setup again

If the above steps do not help, please use the instructions at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/16/481689.aspx to gather and send me the log files from your system so I can take a deeper look.

  • I have an xp machine running media center with media player 11>  My machine is a sony vgc-rc210g with all updates to xp and media center.  No zone alarm.  I am running the mcafee version of aol security center ie firewall, spyware and virus protection.  media center opens and works fine except to watch tv and I get the temporary disk error screen pop.  I assume something is blocking access from the app to the hard drive (DVR)?

I have read all the blogs and what have you that I can find but to no avail?  any ideas

  • Hi Marathons55 - I haven't heard of this type of error before.  It does sound like a DVR error (because even for live TV, Media Center records a buffer in the background for when you press pause, etc).  I'd suggest posting the full text of the error message at one of the following locations and hopefully someone there will be able to suggest a solution:
