How to locate guide download errors in the Application event log

You can use the following steps to look at the Application event log to try to determine the error code(s) that are being produced by a guide download failure:

  1. Click on the Start menu, choose Run and type eventvwr.exe
  2. Open the Application event log
  3. Find any errors or warnings with the source name of Media Center Scheduler

Descriptions of guide download errors

The following table lists the possible error codes that could be logged in the Application event log by the Media Center Scheduler service for guide download issues along with recommended actions to take to attempt to resolve the issue:

 

Event ID Text in event log Recommended action
0 No error. If this is logged, it probably means that the EPG downloader crashed during a download. Depending on the text of the message, take appropriate action (see if it maps to the text of any of the other errors); otherwise, try attempting download again, check for updates, or reinstall the product.
1 User aborted download. Not an error - user intentionally aborted download.
2 Must agree to Media Center Terms of service before Guide download. In Media Center, choose Settings, then TV, then Guide, then Set Up Guide Listings. This could happen if you did not agree to the guide terms of service, but then chose the menu option to download guide data later.
3 Error attempting to start the Guide download process. Restart your computer and try downloading again. Restart the machine. If that does not work, run services.msc and verify that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is started and running.
4 An unknown connection failure occurred. Please try again later. Check internet connection settings. This is a catch-all for several different types of error.
5 Could not determine connection type. Registry information may have changed. In Media Center, choose Settings, then General, then Media Center Setup, then Run Media Center Setup Again.
6 Could not determine connection type. Registry information may have changed. In Media Center, choose Settings, then General, then Media Center Setup, then Run Media Center Setup Again.
7 The specified dial-up connection cannot be found. Please create or select a new connection in Media Center Settings. In Media Center, choose Settings, then General, then Media Center Setup, then Run Media Center Setup Again. This means that the specified dial-up connection for Media Center to use cannot be found anymore; it may have been deleted.
8 Connection failure. Check internet connection settings. This could be caused by specifying manual download, trying to download in the shell, but then being disconnected from the internet.
9 LAN connection not working. Please check proxy settings and try again. Check internet connection settings. Type in "http://www.microsoft.com/" into the Web browser and see if that works. This error code is logged at the start of any connection attempt based on whether Media Center can access the well-known host "http://www.microsoft.com/".
10 Dialup failed. Check settings of dial-up connection selected for Media Center download. Recommendations vary based on the detailed error string that follows the text in the event log.
11 There is no dial tone. Please make sure that your telephone cable is plugged in to your computer and your telephone outlet. Plug in phone line.
12 Authentication error. Please check username and password for your Internet connection. Save your user name and password in the dial-up connection you selected for Media Center.
13 Failure attempting to download new Guide data. Please ensure that you are connected to the Internet. If you connect through a LAN, ensure that your proxy or firewall has been properly configured. Check internet connection settings. This is generally an issue with the proxy configuration.
14 Unknown discovery service error. Please try downloading later. Determine if the machine is capable of making any HTTPS connections. This error has been reported in some cases when the network or proxy server blocks HTTPS connections.
15 Unknown Guide service error. Please try downloading later. Try download later. 
16 Unknown ads service error. Please try downloading later. Try download later. 
17 Unknown logo service error. Please try downloading later. Try download later. 
18 Unknown headend service error. Please try downloading later. Try download later. 
19 The TV listings provider currently chosen is no longer valid. Please choose a new listings provider in Media Center Settings/Guide Setup. In Media Center, choose Settings, then General, then Media Center Setup, then Run Media Center Setup Again.
20 File validation error -mismatched guide package. Try download later.  Another possible workaround can be found in this blog post.
21 File validation error -mismatched ad package. Try download later. 
22 File validation error -mismatched logo package. Try download later. 
23 Unable to load new Guide file. Please try downloading later, or changing your lineup in Media Center Settings. Try download later. If that does not solve the problem, rename the folder %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG. You may also need to rename %ALLUSERSPROFILE%.WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG if that folder exists.
24 Unable to update new Guide file. Restart your computer and try downloading again. In Media Center, choose Settings, then TV, then Guide, then Get Latest Guide Listings. If that fails, rename the folder %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG.
25 Data decompression processing error. Please try downloading later, or changing your lineup in Media Center Settings. In Media Center, choose Settings, then TV, then Guide, then Get Latest Guide Listings. If that fails, rename the folder %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG.
27 Discovery Service: Unsupported protocol version. Please check for product updates. Check for product updates.
28 Discovery Service: Invalid client id. Registry information may have changed. Delete the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG\clientid. If that does not work, check for product updates.
29 Discovery Service: Authentication error. Registry information may have changed. Try download later. 
30 Discovery Service: Unsupported country/region. Selected country may not be valid. Check regional settings control panel, and make sure they match up with what is supported by Media Center.
31 Discovery Service: Unsupported language. Selected language may not be valid. Check regional settings control panel, and make sure they match up with what is supported by Media Center.
32 Discovery Service: Unsupported client type. Please check for product updates. Check for product updates.
33 Discovery Service: Unexpected error. Please try again later. Try download later. 
34 Discovery Service: Service unavailable. Please try again later. Try download later. 
35 Headend Service: Invalid client id. Registry information may have changed. Delete the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG\clientid. If that does not work, check for product updates.
36 Headend Service: Unsupported country/region. Selected country user may not be valid. Check regional settings control panel, and make sure they match up with what is supported by Media Center.
37 Headend Service: Unsupported language. Selected language may not be valid. Check regional settings control panel, and make sure they match up with what is supported by Media Center.
38 Headend Service: Unsupported zip code, postal code, or geographic location. Make sure the ZIP, postal, or geographic code being entered is valid. Make sure regional settings are correct in the Regional Settings control panel (for example, if you are entering Canadian postal codes, you have set the machine to a Canadian locale and not a U.S. locale).
39 Headend Service: Invalid server session credentials. Please try again later. Try download later. 
40 Headend Service: Unsupported client type. Please check for product updates. Check for product updates.
41 Headend Service: Service unavailable. Please try again later. Try download later. 
42 Headend Service: Unexpected error. Please try again later. Try download later. 
43 Guide Service: Invalid client id. Registry information may have changed. Delete the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG\clientid. If that does not work, check for product updates.
44 Guide Service: Unsupported country/region. Selected country may not be valid. Check regional settings control panel, and make sure they match up with what is supported by Media Center.
45 Guide Service: Unsupported language. Selected language may not be valid. Check regional settings control panel, and make sure they match up with what is supported by Media Center.
46 Guide Service: Invalid supplier id. Please change lineup in Media Center Settings. Run through "Change Lineup" section of Media Center.
47 Guide Service: Invalid headend. Please change lineup in Media Center Settings. Run through "Change Lineup" section of Media Center.
49 Guide Service: Invalid server session credentials. Please try again later. Try download later. 
50 Guide Service: Unsupported client type. Please check for product updates. Check for product updates.
51 Guide Service: Unsupported schema version. Please check for product updates. Check for product updates.
52 Guide Service: Unexpected error. Please try again later. Try download later.

81 No TV listings provider has been selected. Please choose a lineup in Media Center Settings/Guide Setup. In Media Center, choose Settings, then General, then Media Center Setup, then Run Media Center Setup Again.
82 Program Guide info not available. Data may be corrupt. Please reboot and try again. Restart the machine. If that does not solve the problem, rename the folder %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG. You may also need to rename %ALLUSERSPROFILE%.WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG if that folder exists.
83 Unable to automatically disconnect your connection. The currently selected dial-up connectoid cannot be fully controlled by Media Center. It is a known issue that Media Center cannot disconnect internet connections for some Internet Service Providers (ISPs), even though Media Center has the capability to create the connections. This is considered a critical incompatibility because the inability to automatically disconnect connections could result in excess internet connection charges.

    Whilst the performance of my system is fairly robust, I have viewed the Event Log and found the following 2 Errors. Firstly under Media Center Scheduler:

    "The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Media Center Scheduler ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Update Request with new Guide data caused an exception.."

    And then under Media Center Guide:

    "Event Info: TitleQuery: DoQuery Error

    Process: DefaultDomain

    Object Name: Microsoft.Ehome.Epg.Query.TitleQuery

    For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

    These errors occur at least daily and if have a feeling it may have something to do with the way my setup, every so often, throughs it's towel in and doesn't record anything etc.

    Any thoughts on how to get round this? I have already gone down the route of deleting the exisiting EPG and settings from the My Documents folder and whilst it is okay for a few days, it soon starts it's old tricks again.

    I've also seen the same error as "hissingsid". My MCE 2005 machine is joined to an AD domain, and if the (single) domain controller can't be found, MCE is unable to download guide data and logs the event shown in hissingsid's comment.

    Hi,
    I see the first error as mentioned by "hissingsid" atleast 2-3 times every other day in the event viewer. I would like to understand what is the problem here, if possible?

    I get some of these errors once in a while but i can deal with it. the problem that im having is when im watching tv, specially recorded ones i get a clicked sound and then all the buttons on the remote wouldn't work even when i use the mouse. but the movie is still going without a problem... then that's the time i press ctrl alt del. then i end the program then i get this message:

    ehshell.exe

    App has generated an exception that couldn't be handled

    Process id=0xi704(5892), Thread id=0xb84(2948)

    please help me it's really annoying when i have to always pre ctrl alt del in the middle of the movie. i really want to use the remote because i want to fast forward all these commercials..

    Hi Himanshu - You are getting a class not registered error on this system.  Normally that can be solved by repairing/reinstalling Update Rollup 2 for Media Center 2005 and then repairing/reinstalling the latest update rollup you have installed (either KB908250 or KB912067).  Can you please try this and see if it helps?

    I was getting "unknown discovery service error:. Code 14" and finally figured out the problem -- my system clock was set to 2002 due to me having had to clear the BIOS after messing it up while installing a new hard drive. Apparently MCE gets very confused trying to look up program guide information from 4 years ago (understandably so). Once I set the time the guide downloaded without any problems.
