How to get Sonic CD/DVD burning software to create a log file for debugging

  • Comments 22

I learned a cool trick last week that might be useful if you are running into issues while using the built-in Sonic CD/DVD burning software in Media Center 2005.  The following steps will enable creation of a log file for debugging purposes:

  1. Click on the Start menu, choose Run and type notepad %windir%\ehome\createdisc\soniclog_mce.log
  2. Click Yes to create a new file in this location
  3. Close Notepad and click Yes to save the file

Once you have created this file, any subsequent times that you use Sonic burning functionality inside of Media Center, it will write to this file.  This file has to already exist before Sonic will write to it however, so it will not log any error information until you manually go and create a new file with the expected name in this location.

If you run into any issues with CD/DVD burning, please create this log file and include it when contacting me or your customer support representative.  I'd also encourage you to open up the log file and take a look at it yourself as well.  There are some errors that have relatively simple workarounds that can be determined simply by looking at the error log information.

Hope this helps....

  • Hi Jace055 - Do you receive the same error for all files that you try to burn, or only for this specific episode of King of the Hill?  It might help to try to uninstall and reinstall the Sonic Encoders product by using sonicencoders.msi from your original installation media.
  • Thanks for getting back to me!!  I have indeed tried many different TV shows at lengths from 1 min to 2 hours.  I have also tried uninstalling and  reinstalling Sonic Encoders many times.  Thanks for the suggestions.

I didn't have a problem until rollup 2 and if I do a system restore to pre-rollup 2 I can burn just fine.  The "invalid media" leads me to believe that there is some sort of incompatibility with my drive (and or all of the firmware avalible) so I have ordered a new one which will arrive in a few days.

After dealing with this problem for a while and Googling for hours, I thought I would ask you because you seem to be the most knowledgable about the Sonic Encoder plugin.  I can't seem to find anyone with the same problem and I didn't know if you had seen it before.  Thanks.
  • Hi Jace055 - If you haven't already, can you try to install the most recent post-Update Rollup 2 hotfix from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=22402573-97aa-41be-8090-2ae905802045&displaylang=en and see if that helps at all?
  • Aaron,

I have a similar issue - although frustratingly the program seems to get to ~77% before posting the same 'Create failure' error (an error has occured in creating the CD/DVD).  Mine is a brand new machine with Roll-Up 2 installed and current drivers. I created a log file which is attached.  Hope you can shed some like on this problem.  Thanks & Happy NY.

  • Hi Alkeith - I'm not familiar with this type of error.  Did you edit the DVR-MS file at all before trying to burn it to DVD?  I have heard of some problems with burning DVR-MS files that have been edited (to remove commercials or for other reasons).  If that is the case, you may want to try to burn this file to a video DVD using some other DVD burning software.

If that is not the case, it might help to uninstall and re-install the Sonic Encoders software on your system or repair the Sonic Windows components.

  • Aaron,

Not sure if this thread is still checked but I'm yanking my hair out trying to get my recorded TV burned to DVD.  It used to work until about 3 months ago.  I think these are the pertinent lines from the SonicLog_mce.log file.  Please help if you can.

  • Hi Ronjako - I can't tell for sure from this log snippet what the problem might be.  It could help to uninstall and re-install the Sonic components on your system to try to repair this issue.  It might also help to post a question on the Microsoft.Public.Windows.MediaCenter newsgroup to see if anyone there has any additional suggestions.
