Xbox 360 PC setup troubleshooting suggestions

Xbox 360 PC setup troubleshooting suggestions

  • Comments 7

I have posted a few items in the past related to the Xbox 360 PC setup package that can be used to configure an Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Center extender.  In order to make it easier to find all of the suggestions I have posted, I created an article with links to each of them.  You can take a look at the Troubleshooting guide for Xbox 360 PC setup issues to see the previous posts I have written on this topic.

One important thing to note that is listed at the bottom of that article is that the Media Center Extender team at Microsoft asked me to let everyone know that they monitor the newsgroup named Microsoft.Public.Windows.MediaCenter to search for Xbox 360 PC setup issues.  If you run into issues installing or configuring an Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Center extender, please search that newsgroup for similar issues, and if none are found, please post a new thread there so that the team will be more likely to see the issues and respond to them in a timely manner.

  • Hi,

Everything in media center seems to work fine when used through the PC - not
tried MP3's yet but the fm radio, tv, recording tv, pictures and videos all
work fine so i assume music will too, not a single problem there so far.

For the 360 side, the installation all worked fine on the PC and it all
connects fine but when i select "live TV" the PC totally freezes and the
xbox disconnects - same thing happens if i select "recorded tv" then select
a recorded program. Happens everytime, sometimes i get a second or two of
sound outputted before it locks up and exits.

Everything on the PC works fine though, it's just when i use the TV option
via the xbox as an extender.

I can stream pictures, videos etc.. to the xbox just not either of the tv
    options.

I've installed all of the updates i can find from microsoft update so
everything should be up to date.

The network tests said it should be fine for streaming tv - i'm using a
wired router (PC and 360 both wired to it) so no wireless is involved at the
    moment.

can't find any solutions at the moment, any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Hi,

Everything in media center seems to work fine when used through the PC - Except Live and Recorded TV.

I can stream pictures, videos via transcode360 etc.. to the xbox just not either of the tv

The PC is up to date with all of MS patches.

I have Windows OneCare - All ports that are required or open - as per  microsoft website.

    Any Idea's?
  • If anyone is using Windows OneCare, be forewarned that the Setup won't open the ports in the firewall for you, nor will clicking the configuration button in Windows Media Connect on your normal XP machine.

OneCare will migrate settings during setup only, so if you set up the Extender and/or Windows Media Connect after installing OneCare you must manually configure the firewall. You can find documentation for this by searching for "windows media connection" or "xbox extender" in the OneCare help site.

  • Hi Yardman - I have not heard of this issue before.  I suggest posting this on the Microsoft.Public.Windows.MediaCenter newsgroup and hopefully someone there will be able to help.

Hi Heath - Thanks for the pointer to the OneCare configuration steps.  I have posted a set of links I found on the OneCare site at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/06/27/649282.aspx in order to hopefully make searching for this type of issue easier for folks in the future.

  • Yardman, I had the exact problem that you described.  I upgraded my ethernet card drivers and now I can stream live tv and recorded tv from my media center PC to my xbox 360.   I have an HP Pavilion with a RealTek ethernet card, oddly the latest driver was NOT on the realtek site,  but I found it on an HP driver update site.  good luck.
