Added Windows LIVE Web page translator to my blog for quick automatic translations of posts

Earlier this week, a friend of mine let me know about the Windows LIVE Web page translator.  I decided to add the translator tool to my blog since it only requires adding a small script block to my main blog page.  You can now find the translator tool in the left column on all of my blog pages underneath the News heading and the disclaimer.  When you navigate to individual blog posts, you can use the translator tool to have the automatic translation engine attempt to translate the blog post into one of the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Chinese (Traditional)
  • Dutch
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish

Of these languages, I only speak French, so I tried it out on a few of my posts for the French language translation engine, and it seems to do a pretty good job.  There are some blocks of text that it doesn't seem to even try to translate, so I'll have to try to figure out how to better tune my writing style to work better for this type of engine in the future.  If you read one of these languages, hopefully this tool will be helpful for you as you browse the content on my blog.

  • Oh...

I live in Quebec, Canada so 95% of the time I speak French.

I just tried out the French translation and I can tell you that it's an awful translation.

I'm going to stick to the original text if you don't mind ;-)

I really hope the translation engine gets better though...

  • Hi DMurillo - Thanks for giving this a try.  The translations I looked at didn't appear to be proper French, but they did seem to be enough to give me an idea of what the post was trying to say.  That isn't too useful if you're able to understand the English version but could hopefully be useful if you don't understand English well enough.  It looks like the translation engine is something that continually gets updated over time, so hopefully things will improve in the future as well.

  • Awesome. Thanks, Aaron.

How did you hook this up into your blog main page/sidebar using the javascript below?

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.windowslivetranslator.com/TranslatePageLink.aspx?pl=ko"></script>

  • Hi MiraPark - The way that I hooked this translator widget up on my page is to go into My Blog Dashboard, then choose Global Settings, then Title, Description and News.  I put the script block into my News text box.

The way you enable this in your blog will depend on what blog engine your blog uses behind the scenes.  If it is an MSDN blog, you should be able to use the same steps that I did.

    Hopefully this helps!
