I always avoid Sony Laptops, I always get the feeling that they have a lot of problems I don't know why :D

Anyways, drivers problems are old fashion now, since Windows Vista, Microsoft has worked really hard on making sure that they don't miss an driver of an important hardware.

Really, I haven't thought about drivers since 2007 (except once with a crappy HP printer), I recently bought a WiFi USB adapter for my brother's Windows 7 PC, and after 5 seconds after connecting it to his PC, Windows 7 was already asking me to choose one of the available wireless networks !!! I was VERY surprised by the speed :O

re: WhyLinuxIsBetter.net Seriously!

Apparently el Bashmohandes got tired of all those Linux Freaks commenting on his blog post :D

I've spoken with a lot of linux freaks and they're all crazy with the word "freedom", I really don't get it, actually the only part I understand from their freedom craze is the part that Linux is Open Source and you can modify it and re-distribute it as much as you like, and I agree that Open Source is cool, but nobody says that there aren't Open Source software for windows, and actually I've seen some Open Source software made by Microsoft Employees (check codeplex.com) !

I used to get pirated software, but since I got my new laptop I decided that I'm only gonna use free software, so since Windows 7 and some other things came pre-installed on my laptop, I considered them free from my POV, and I downloaded and installed a lot of Microsoft software for free legally (check dreamspark.com and MSDN AA) !

@AbuShokry: about the cost of Windows, you can easily find cheap laptops with Windows 7 in them these days, and high school and university students can get Windows 7 for free from MSDN AA, all my friends at the GUC got it that way :)

and about the not being a thief part, I already made that decision (specially when I became a developer and though about how it would feel like if people stole software the I made), however I'm still on Windows, I didn't have to switch to linux to make that decision :D

and to the part about increasing the community, well that's really Open Source Software's problem, it's VERY VERY dependent on the about of people committing to it's repository (ie: it's contributors), however big companies like Microsoft already have a lot of developers and the quality of their work is more guaranteed and thus customers can rely on them.

and on your last point, yes we need to fight software piracy in Egypt and the middle east but not necessarily with Linux :D

I think arab developers should focus more on their projects and starts selling them in arab markets for competitive prices, I actually plan on being a Game Developer one day and start selling Games in stores for a like 10 LE, nobody will bother searching for a cracked version if the price is cheap enough :)

When I talk to people about Linux, I stress on the point of Freedom. We have totally no right to use a pirated software. It's Forbidden/7aram to do that (all the scholars agreed on that). I have no problem to use Windows if you can buy it. But the thing is, how many people here in Egypt can affored buying software (they could hardly buy the hardware). So if that the case, why don't we use Linux? Linux is much much better than before now, there are distros now that target mainly the ease of use for home users (e.g. Linux Mint, SuperOS (ubuntu)).

I guess the only problem with Linux now is the Games thing. But don't you think that it worth it to dump games for a better cause, where you feel really free, when we feel that we don't have to pay for something that we can't afford, or when you say to your self "I'm not a thief anymore".

The more the Community increases the more the product will get better, right? That's what we need to do with Linux, we need to support the community. Why not guys?!, since it really provide now every thing the ordinary user needs. And if you are a developer you will find everything you need in Linux even if you were a .Net Developer, Mono is in a really Good shape now and implementing the .Net Framework 3.5 + ASP.Net 2.0.

I really do think that Linux is a very important concept that must be put in the Arabic nation mind where more than 90% of people is using Pirated Software. Also Linux and 'OpenSource' community is the only way for us to Finally be able to really share in the sum of the human knowledge. To really be productive rather than a consumer which is our main problem.

re: Javascript tricks for ASP.net developers

This advice is quite outdated. Firefox and Firebug are lame in comparison to Internet Exporer 8 and the IE Developer Toolbar. The Javascript debugging in IE is awesome!

re: Parallel Event Handling in Windows Workflow

Dear,

Actually Linux in desktop is not close to be a competitor as Mac OS is, and the competition is always between Windows & MacOS, Linux is the other 1% that don't use either, the only reason we hear about Linux that much that it is the loudest 1% crowd.

Linux is a real competitor in the Server market, and it is very obvious because of the Unix heritage in the servers Linux got an edge on that, but Microsoft is doing great job in this Market, and Windows Server 2003 & 2008 were great successes and I think you've worked with them

@hasenj

Viruses & Malwares on XP are because of that eveyone is using Admin rights all the time, also the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) wasn't introduced till XP SP2 and requires Hardware support which most XP old machine didn't have, and this prevents lots of exploits platform wide even on Third Party Code.

and the most important factor is the market share, if Linux had the 90% market share I am certain it would have had more malwares

re: WhyLinuxIsBetter.net Seriously!

All the normal people (not geeks, just normal, intelligent people who might be doctors and engineers, but not computer geeks) who use XP have MANY problems with viruses and malware.

PC Gaming is not going anywhere, everybody knows this, and the investments in the PC gaming are increasing continuously, XBOX is great for gaming in general, but PC still where you can play as well as work as well as surf internet ... etc, it is the all purpose hub for work, entertainment, study, creativity and anything in between.

Linux for users is still far behind, if Linux want to success it shouldn't declare victory now, it should work harder and hrder and harder, and in the same time Windows & MacOSX are not staying still, they are working harder and harder.

There is no direct relation between open source & innovative work, for example (To not talk about Microsoft) Apple is considered one of the most innovative companies and their software/hardware is more closed than Microsoft.

I strongly disagree with your claim that there is a standard way to install programs on Linux, you have so may different packages + some times you need to build from source, and some times you have packages that are supported on a distro out of box while on the other distro is not, .. etc this issue is being solved but very slowly.

Installation size is not an OS feature, Istallation time is, Windows in general installs in less time than any Linux distro with similar features,

This is a very clear justification of why Windows use more space

- Linux is open source == more innovative, and remember thought you think eye candy and 3d effects are unpractical, MS used the same eye candy look of Vista as a plus

- A standard way to install almost any program using yum, apt, .. with online repositories

- Installation size is much moooore less than Vista installation size

re: WhyLinuxIsBetter.net Seriously!

Windows XP put nail in the coffin of the instability argument. In my IT experience, XP Blue-screens are rare. And when they do occur it usually isn't Window's fault (blame drivers/hardware).

As far as Windows slowing down over time, I've been running the same XP install for over 4 years on my desktop. It's likely a little slower, but it's still fairly snappy.

My experiences with Linux, while enthusiastic, are often ruined by poor/nonexistent driver support and the lack of appealing software (appealing to me, at least). However I commend those who successfully use Linux as their daily driver, as long as they don't pushy about it.

re: WhyLinuxIsBetter.net Seriously!

Oh sorry I miss your installation point.

As I mentioned please don't compare Drivers experience between Windows & Linux, it is not even comparable, when every single hardware you buy comes wih a CD that contains all drivers for your hardware, I have never asked whether this VGA card or modem or anything will work on Windows before I buy it? it just works and even if you didn't find your CD, you can just download the driver from the web site of the manufacurer, how hard is to install a driver, Windows make it as easy as installing a game, nothing more than another package you install, and that's it.

and about working out of the box, Windows will recognize all your basic hardware like Network cards, VGA, Monitor, Modem, DVD, USB mice & keyboards even wireless ones, flash drives, every single type of hard drives, you name it, if you have a special hardware feature that requires the driver for it just install it.

and as you mentioned after you have a clean install make an image out of it, we all do this and it saves time.

On linux I might need to recompile my kernel to install a new driver, and edit bunch of config files that are not even following the same structure, and if I am lucky enough I could make things work.

If you are bold enough to build your own PC, you should be at least able to find your drivers, on Windows this is not rocket science, on Linux it is not either but it is easy to hit a wall when you find that you can't make the sound work accross applications because your driver is stupid

re: WhyLinuxIsBetter.net Seriously!

@A.Y.Siu

In Windows XP and even Windows 2000 you could still run some application as different user even though you are logging with a limited one, just right click on the application and select Run-As and you will be prompted to enter the username and password of the other account, it has just made easier in Windows Vista & 7

Even if you are running with Admin account you are not in such danger as all Linux fans are claiming, as long as you have an updated anti-virus you will be safe, as I mentioned before don't have an unsafe sex and then blame the viruses, you shoud blame yourself, and starting from Windows Vista the problem of running on Admin rights all the time.

For restarts problem, it is not an issue to restart your box when you can delay it whenever you are free to restart, and in Windows Vista even if the machine was idle and restarted itself, all you unsaved data are restored to the exent of the caret position inside an application, so you might have restarted overnight and you don't notice this.
