  • Something up with the link to "pre-order-visual-studio-2010" page...it seems to be read as

    not just

So the link takes you to a "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found" page

  • Thanks, I've fixed it.  Someday I'll learn to start testing the links before I post.  In some cases, like this one, I'm just posting something someone gave me and I'm naively assuming they tested it :(

  • I would like to pre-order it; however, both the Microsoft store and Amazon refuse to send it out of the US. And I absolutely do NOT a localized version. I had this exact same problem with Windows 7 which delayed my purchase by half a year.

Any other options? Or should I just wait until the next time that I visit the US?

    BTW, the RC is great.

  • Wait, does this imply that ms will no longer be offering an upgrade price of $550 after launch? That's how much we've been paying for 2008. If 2010 is going to be $800 even if you have 2008 that's a lot more than I budgeted spending for my team.

  • Ben, it depends a bit on where you are.  I have links for 3 other countries:

    UK: http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-gb/pre-order-visual-studio-2010

    Germany: http://www.microsoft.com/germany/visualstudio/buy/preorder-2010/

    India: http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-in/pre-order-visual-studio-2010

I think if one of these don't work, then your only alternative might be to purchase MSDN (which costs more) and then you can download it on day 1.

    I hope this helps.

  • Dmeglio, OK I've chased this down and I'd say the text they gave me was misleading.  This time limited offer is a $250 discount on purchases of new VS licenses ($799 - $250 = $549).

Upgrades from previous VS versions are also $540 but that is not a time limited offer.  It will stay that way.

    Sorry for the confusion,

    Brian

  • OK, hold the presses.  Now I'm still not sure I have it right.  I just got conflicting mail on it.  Let me chase it down some more and get back to you.

  • Brian,

The text is quite confusing. It says: "Eligible for upgrade with any previous version of Visual Studio or any other developer tool." Is this an update version requiring a previously installed edition for installation, or is it a full edition? For example, I have old editions of VS 6, VS.Net and 2003 somewhere, but none are installed anymore as I use the various Express 2008 editions. As for "other developer tool[s]", I also use Eclipse, NetBeans, gcc and several others. I am interested in 2010 Professional, but would I be able to install this?

Ultimately my question is this: is this a full installation or an update? Even if I qualify for an upgrade, I am much more interested in a full installation.

  • I get the impression that this was MS tryin to run a nice promotion, but it seems like it's very confusingly worded. To make it even more confusing, anyone else notice amazon says it won't be available till June?

  • Brian: I just went five rounds (e-mail) with Microsoft Store about this offer. I was told was 1) this is an upgrade offer, 2) you will need a previously licensed VS installation, and 3) "any other developer tool" needs to be interpreted as "any other *MS* developer tool". However, apparently even a free VS Express edition will qualify...

That said, I have strong doubts that the representative really knew what he was talking about. I wish that I could get definite confirmation on this offer so that I can decide whether or not to purchase it. Please keep us updated if you find out anything more definite.

  • OK, I think I finally understand the offer.  The pricing is standard upgrade pricing.  It is for upgrades only.  The offer here is the opportunity to be among the first to get it.  Once it lauches, the offer doesn't really apply any more - the price will still be the same but it won't be a pre-order any more :)

Sorry for the confusion.  I changed the title of my post slightly to help reduce the confusion.

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • $549 is still so much more than the old Standard pricing that I'm finding it hard to justify buying it as a hobbyist. But the MSDN trial is interesting; do I get to keep Windows 7 Ultimate even if I don't resubscribe to MSDN? That is, am I basically getting an 'anytime upgrade' via a different route? That could make it far more palatable.

Also, Jason Zander mentioned a 'special deal' for Standard users. Will there be such a thing?

Finally, will the upgrade allow installation without a previous installation already on the HD, perhaps by inserting the install disk from a previous version?
