We’ve finally gotten to shipping an update to VS 2008 SP1 to fully support TFS 11 – including the the hosted service http://www.tfspreview.com.  VS 11 has supported it from the beginning, of course.  We’ve released updates for VS 2010 SP1 along the way.  And now we have an update for VS 2008 SP1.  This will enable VS 2008 SP1 to work fairly seamlessly with TFS 11 and the hosted service.  As has generally been the case in the past, many administrative actions (creating Team Projects, creating Build definitions, modifying process templates, etc) will require you to use a VS 11 based Team Explorer but consuming them will work fine with VS 2008 SP1.

This list of fixes/changes/improvements in this patch includes:

  • VS 2008 SP1 Team Explorer can now connect to TFSPreview.
  • User names in Version Control, when connected to a TFS 11 server,  are now displayed as full names (Firstname Lastname) instead of as account names (domain\alias).
  • Version Control Property change types, new in Team Foundation Server 11, are now displayed in pending changes and in check-in history.
  • Users can now use the new security management web interface.
  • Team Build
    This update fixes an intermittent build issue when there are a large number of build agents that are running against a Team Foundation Server server. In this situation, the build may fail, and you receive the following timeout error message:

    Detailed Message: Team Foundation services are not available from server <’TFS Server Name’>.
    Technical information (for administrator):
    The operation has timed out

    Additionally, a SQL Server deadlock occurs on the TFS server.

The last piece we have left is to add support for VS 2005.  We’re working on that and I’ll let you know when it is available.
