Thank you very much for making a quality product. I have used TFS in both enterprise and start-up environments, and have nothing but good feedback from teams/clients.

I am a career .net developer, not a Build/Source engineer.

Maybe this is the reason that I often ask myself while dealing with installation/maintenance bugs: “Is the work/complexity of a fix worth the feature”.

Over the 20+ installations of TFS 2005 & 2008 I have been involved in, I would say that TFS, once configured properly, is a reliable work-horse of an application. Worth even an acceptable amount of configuration time, since it is really a foundation to a reliable Life Cycle that a company must depend on in order to respond to the technical market of today.

Since I happen to be a professional developer, I have not found a single problem related to installation or configuration that could not be overcome with a small amount (less than 2 hours) of research and patching.

It is obvious your team takes a lot of flack from customers, so here is my encouragement for what your team has done:

The best consultants I have worked with, the ones that focus on features, on quality, and not on how ‘work-free’ a solution is, recommend TFS time and time again.

If TFS is being used for Team Portal, MS Build Deployment Strategies, Source Control, and Agile Management all in one spot, I don’t see very much room to complain about minor deployment issues.

Keep up the good work!

I'm sorry, but I just looked up the knowlegebase numbers given in this article, and realized that this is concerning VSTFS 2005, whereas I'm having the problem with 2008. Because of the similarities, almost all of my searches for resolutions return TFS 2005 solutions.

I think an installation repair may help, but that has a whole new set of issues when I run it. I will run BPA again to have the output on hand in case I need to email it.

Thanks,

I have a few steps to try. First, run the BPA tool, and capture the output. Second, Run Repair (in the control pannel under Add/Remove programs). Third, Run the BPA tool, and capture the output, again.

Running Repair may end up solving the problem, but in case it doesn't, it would be helpful to have before and after snapshots of the system.

If you are still having problems can you e-mail the output of the BPA tool at ablock[A-T]microsoft[D-O-T]com

Thanks,

Too bad there was no (public) response. I am still struggling with this. Even an attempt at installing sp1 was unsuccessful, so I was forced to revert to a snapshot.

It is funny that msiproperty.ini was mentioned, because I have already come across that file. Repair from add/remove fails for me, due to missing install files.

I have a dual machine install. I have set all the security - giving permissions to tfs administrators, sharepoint and reporting services. I can connect to out TFS server from inside the visual studio 2005 IDE and select TFS as my source control, but if I create a new project and try to add it to source control I get the error "HTTP code 503: TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service" inside the IDE. On the TFS server there is another error in the event log "TF53018: The application tier <TFS> is attempting to connect to a data tier with an incompatible version."

The error seems to relate to the SP1 issue except out TFS server has SP2!
