Meet the Team Behind Wander
We recently caught up with Loki Davies from Wander, a BizSpark Start-up who is working on some exciting game development in the cloud!
How did Wander Start? Wander started as a idea while playing table tennis. The creative director, Loki, spent time as a nomad in central Asia and Siberia as well as wandering around the Himalayas. He wanted to create a game with this feeling of discovery and beauty and also explore how our form influences how we see the world and interact with others. So a non-combat, non-competitive, collaborative game was born. What is Wander? Wander is a collaborative, non-combat, non-competitive game. Wander uses exploration, beauty, cooperation and transformation to give you a unique player experience. You begin life as a tree, brought to life by a mysterious and powerful flower and go through various transformations as you progress. The game encourages you to explore the beautiful world around you and discover others like you. You work together and become new entities each with their own unique form and power. If you have ever wondered what it’d be like to soar the skies and feel the wind blow under your wings as a griffon, be one with nature as a noble ent or swim the depths of the ocean as a agile amphibian, you can find out in Wander.

Know your numbers
When beginning your start-up journey, there is so much you need to be on top of –your product, customers, marketing, finding staff… thelist never ends. Whilst most start-ups dread the thought of doing their books, staying on top of your numbers is super important for a start-up’s success.
How can knowing your numbers help you?
Knowing your numbers can lead to better decision making. Your numbers will tell you all of these things… and more
So how do you stay on top of your numbers?
There are a lot of cloud-based programs in the market which make staying on top of your numbers really easy (and even a little bit fun). Programs like Xero* have automatic bank feeds and credit card downloads, which mean you don’t need to waste time typing out lines of bank and credit card statements.
A good tip is to make sure you continue to do your numbers at least once a month. Some start-ups sign-up to software like Xero and start-out with the best of intentions… and then they get too busy and the numbers get forgotten. If you need help, ask for some. Stay on top of your numbers. Have a look at your numbers each month and use those numbers in your decision making. You’ll be surprised at how good the decisions you make can be.

We are super proud of one of our Gold Coast BizSpark Start-Up's Dev Audio who recently launched their new Microcone Voices technology at CES! It's been an incredible journey for this start-up and we are excited to share some news on what they have been up to and just launched!
Microcone Voices, unveiled at CES 2013, is the latest offering from Dev-Audio to make the process of capturing group meetings easier. Microcone Voices uses Dev-Audio’s flagship Microcone to capture up to six different voices and create an interactive display to show who’s speaking when using Skype, helping to eliminate that “mumble jumble” moment when everyone has an idea at one time.
The Microcone, a small portable multi-directional USB microphone device, uses advanced microphone array technology to record and track up to six separate voices simultaneously, and adaptively reduce background noise. Also at CES 2013, Dev-Audio will be introducing Windows support for the Microcone range, including the Recorder app for tagging and recalling meetings.
About the Microcone Using advanced microphone array technology, the Microcone can record and track up to six different voices at once. The accompanying Microcone Recorder app (available for Mac OS X and Windows) indexes meetings by date, participant names and keywords, creates conversation timelines and provides the ability to tag portions of the meeting as Important, Decisions, Action or Question for reference later. An iOS app also turns an iPhone or iPad into a remote that can create tags during the meeting or end the meeting.
Since its introduction, the Microcone has won multiple awards, including the Best of Show at Macworld 2012 and an Australian International Design Award. About Dev-Audio Dev-Audio Pty Ltd is a privately held company based on Australia's Gold Coast. Dev-Audio's vision is to create the world’s leading voice processing technologies for multi-user interaction. Dev-Audio's Founder, Iain McCowan, is an experienced Research and Development Manager and Engineer, with particular expertise in Microphone Array Technology. Prior to forming Dev-Audio, he gained experience in a variety of R&D roles at the Australian CSIRO, the IDIAP Research Institute in Switzerland and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Check out more about Dev-Audio at www.dev-audio.com or on Twitter at @DevAudio.

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?
Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.
The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur, register now for the best weekend of your life!
