Microsoft's Spyware Strategy

New article on the Security at Home site about spyware:

Microsoft's strategy for addressing spyware and other potentially unwanted software

Microsoft's vision for anti-spyware is that customers should be empowered to make informed decisions about the software that installs and runs on their computers. Microsoft will take steps toward this vision by making it easier for customers to gain insight into what's running on the system, to better discern good software from bad software, and to block and remove spyware from a PC.

  • This is a great move from Microsoft.

Spyware is usually not Microsoft's fault (except when they use a vulnerability to install), but it's annoying and it's one of the biggest problems for today's "computing experience". I hope this helps
  • Microsoft's spyware strategy needs to start with Internet Explorer.

So long as Internet Explorer is so closely tied to the desktop, so long as the boundaries between the untrustable Internet and the computer under the user's own control are fuzzy and based on the untrustworthy borders of "security zones", so long will spyware and viruses bedevil us.

If Microsoft wants to give people insight into what's running on their computer, then Microsoft has to break down the myriad conduits between trusted and untrusted objects that run theough the HTML control.
  • I find it so strange that we can go 40 million miles to another planet, control a rover, drill holes in a rock, discover the ingredients, move the vehicle around rocks, and transmit data 40 million miles from and to the planet in a matter of 8 minutes and then Have a picture on the screen discribing what is happening, mind you 40 million miles away.

Now how is that for the cyber world. Yet, while we are venturing on the internet, we can not control the Mob and corrupt activities, nor can we control the mighty terrorist. We can not control naked picture showing up in the faces of people who do not want them. All of this hassle at the epense of some greedy bunch wanting to lift the Stock Market projections. Tell me ain't so. It was just reported that in the year 2004 over 400 corporations were indicted by the Justice Department for wrong doings about who they are and the money they tend to.

Do we have a problem. Yep? Should we all ban together to resolve this. Yep. All microsoft has to do is find the ligits out there..offer a web site for suggestions on how to fix this mess and trust me there will be a ton of answers on what and how to do it.

Now, if I know the crooks, they would never want this to happen. So, the question is do we have enough Stateman or Statewoman to change it the way it ought to be instead of leaving it the way it is: which is a mess. There are millions that will not use their computers (Costing Money too) because of the greedy and uncaring people that are so busy making a little, that they have forgotten how to make a lot of money honestly>

Thanks for listening. Wee-ee need a sounding board to get this straighten out, and it should not be the state nor federal governments. \

  • I have said this before in another post. Neither Windows XP nor IE are platforms that lack security, but they have been shiping with the wrong configuration by MS. This is because in the early years MS focused on functionality, not security. This is understandable historically, but times have changed now.

I have been running an Internet Cafe here in Brazil for about two years. The first year of operation I could not contain the onslought of viruses and spyware that my customers would get my machines infected with.

Despite my heavy experience with security, it became clear to me that the efficacy of antivirus and antispyware software was a myth, because both of them work on a post-mortem architecture.

Their updates work realtively well for known viruses but for new code they are completely innefective.

The second year of operations I went back to the drawing board and looked for the priciples of a good configuration, and put them in practice. This principle exist both in UNIX and Windows.

80,000 hours later (concurrent hours of use by my users) demostrate a feat in the industry: zero infections, 100% complete immunity, zero loss of functionality.

This is accomplished in an environment in which my customers access all kinds of crappy sites, pornography, cracks sites, etc, etc, where the breeding points of infection are rampant. The Café was an ideal test bed for this kind of brute testing.

I have in essence, the world´s most secure windows configuration, based on principles that already exist, and non-special software.

But most importantly, this configuration is easy to accomplish with the inclusion of the tools that are already present in the OS, and when IE runs within a secure OS environment, IE is also secure.

If anyone is interested in verifying my claim, you can come down to my café in Marilia, São Paulo. The results will surprise you and it will demonstrate you that the industry is full of misconceptions. Even MS believes these myths.

MS is suffering without necessity, the original NT architecture created by Cutler and his team was well designed.

    Sincerely,

WHY? and why I was not told, rationality tells me that this tool is there to watch your every move. If not why is that tool in my computer. To me Microsoft started, alow others to do it,
and this wont end. This is not the land of the free but the Land of thoose who screw their own. And the day that you go to the spy files, your freadom is gone. Microsoft will never do something, is just talk. Forget about it. Who Am I to said this nobody just a Computer Forensic data analisist
