    Remote Record Works!

Sitting on the couch tonigh, my wife asks, "Can you record Fear Factor on that machine of yours?" I say sure and I use Remote Record to set the recording from my laptop. The show gets recorded on the Media Center  and we're watching it now through the Xbox Media Extender.  :)

    Xbox Media Center Extender Video

I spent most of my vacation this holiday rebuilding my computer systems and network. I installed Windows Media Center Extender on my living room Xbox and on my Media Center 2005 PC. The results have been absolutely amazing. I'm demoing the finished system to my wife and kids and they're currently watching the old home movies. They could care less about all the technology that I'm so excited about, for them it's all about the content. (As it should be.)

I decided to put together a little video demo of the system. This is a five meg file shot with my Sony TR3 laptop. (There's a noticeable grinding sound in the video, which is from the hard drive on the laptop. I'll use a mic next time.)

You can check out the video here.
If you have any comments let me know. If this works out, I'll start to put together some other videos.

Amazing Xbox Stats from Major Nelson

    Check this out ...

    Some cool Xbox stats....

    • For the 13th consecutive month, Xbox grew its share of year-over-year monthly console sales -- climbing an additional 19 percent compared to last year -- and hitting a 41 percent share in November.
    • Market share on a year-to-date basis for Xbox increased from 24 percent in 2003 to 37 percent in 2004. During the same time, PS2 share dropped from 51 percent to 45 percent.
    • Xbox year-over-year console sales for November increased a staggering 61 percent, while PS2 decreased 17 percent.
I'm thinking Live support is making all the difference. :)

    Halo 2 Recent Games

So I've added my recent Halo 2 games to my blog page. It's pretty cool that you can acually get an RSS feed of your Halo 2 stats, and it's even more interesting that you can use something like Newsgator to get them to show up on your blog page.

Greg Reinacker has the details of how to set this up here.

    Halo 2 vs. Half-Life 2

Well, it's not really like that, but Steve posted that he's tempted to get an Xbox simply to play Halo 2. I'm having similar pains over Half-Life 2. My beautiful wife picked up a copy of Halo 2 for me this morning at Target. On my home PC, I've got a ready to activate copy of Half-Life 2. The problem is, after playing the source beta for Counter-Strike 2, I find that my video card isn't quite up to snuff for the HL2 release. So my conundrum is, do I buy a new video card so that I can play HL2, or do I save myself 250 bucks and just get some of the other great new Xbox games that are coming out this fall? The mind reels...

Update: I'm going to get a new video card and at get the game.(Eventually) I didn't mean to start a Vi vs. Emacs war, my only point was that I don't have to screw with the console games at all. I can just pop a disk in and play it. The PC is a little tougher, as I want to play wide screen and I want it to run well. I love playing Counter-Strike, so there was never really a question that I would get the software. I'm also looking forward to playing with the source code and maybe building a level or two. :)

Steve Makofsky Links to Widescreen Gaming Sites

OK, this is just what I needed. I don't have an actual widescreen TV, but I did get a widescreen monitor that I'm really liking a lot. Now my laptop and my desktop both do 1280 by 768 resolution. Steve found some resources for making games work at the widescreen resolutions.

In messing around with all this HDTV stuff, I found is that most Xbox games snap into widescreen automatically. More and more, I'm doing my gaming on the Xbox. I'm spending more time time playing and less time tweaking.
