The Visual Studio 2012 RC ALM Virtual Machine is now available!

This new VM replaces the previously available Visual Studio 11 Beta ALM virtual machine to use the latest Visual Studio 2012 RC releases.

This is hands-down the most comprehensive ALM virtual machine yet. It includes 18 hands-on-labs / demo scripts. 6 of these were upgraded from the Visual Studio 11 ALM virtual machine, 11 of these were upgraded from the older Visual Studio 2010 ALM virtual machine, and one is brand new, highlighting the PreEmptive Analytics integration in Team Foundation Server 2012. Phew!

  • Wow, that's great news Brian, it's really good decision to include the labs of Visual Studio 2010 because there are great features in 2010 and not all people know about it, I think it will be easy now to introduce these feature on 2012.

    Thanks

  • Brilliant work Brian! As usual :-) I used your VM yesterday evening at work for an in-house tech-presentation. Thanks a lot!

  • Hi Brian, is it possibile to upload this vhd to azure and use the azure vm facilities? I have just x86.

  • @al,

I have not had a chance to try this. In theory, I believe it should work. I'm unsure if Azure VM's let you disconnect the time synchronization with the host like you do in a local Hyper-V environment, so if they don't, the project management labs won't look 100% correct. Other than that, however, I believe it should work.

If you get a chance to try this can you let me know how it goes? :-)

  • I've just completed the upload but I cannot see it in the blob storage. After some investigation I discovered that my MSND professional subscription allows 20GB of storage while the vhd is around 40GB. Hmmm, I guess I need to find a different solution.

  • Hi Brain,

Thank you very much for providing the VS 2012 RC vhd.

I have downloaded the rar files and extracted the VS2012 RC VPC and gave internet connectivity in VPC.

When I click Activate Windows and select "Activate Windows Online now" it gives me error and message is "A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error 0x80072F8F"

Let me know any other way to activate OS.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Nagaraj

  • Thanks Brian for these great labs. My state agency just finished the TFS Essentials class and it was a great experience. Question: Most of our team is on Windows 7 but want to use the ALM Virtual Labs you setup. Has anybody tested/reported that this setup will work?

  • Stephen, I'm glad to hear it has been successful for you!

Unfortunately no, these won't work on Windows 7. You can use any operating system which is capable of hosting Hyper-V virtual machines (Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8). Note that the steps will be slightly different for Server 2012 or Windows 8, the primary operating system I'm "supporting" at the moment is Windows Server 2008 R2.

I have seen other people use 3rd party virtualization platforms such as VMWare and VirtualBox with my virtual machine, but I am not an expert in those technologies and I am unable to support them. If you try converting them, remember that you need to disable time synchronization with the host or else the project management hands-on-lab won't work correctly.

  • @Nagaraj,

Please follow the "Working with..." documentation for how to activate Windows. If you follow this step by step it will work. You seem to be missing the step where you change the system date (temporarily).

  • Thanks Brian. I am working with Ops to see if we can isolate your TFS2012 labs from our network environment. If we cross that bridge we are good to go.
