"Repair Information Rights Management" in Office 2007

I know that it has been awhile since my last post.  I have been extremely busy and have a few blog posts to put out there.  I have had this problem since the last time I built my laptop.  I installed the corporate image from the RIS server.  No issues.  I installed Office 2007 Enterprise from the corporate network.

Any time I tried to open an email message that had restricted access, I would get the following message:

Your Information Rights Management configuration is invalid and needs to be repaired.  For more information, contact your system administrator.

Well that just blew chunks!  So I looked into it by going to search engines.  Nothing could be found.  I ran Office repair and rebooted - still getting the same message.  So, I asked some colleges.  They told me to reinstall office.  I tried that, to no avail.  So I did another search.  Luckily I found an answer.  Below is the answer that I found:

This workaround should fix you:

  1. Close all Office applications (make sure outlook.exe is not running, through task manager).
  2. Run the following commands from a command prompt:
    • del /f %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\DRM\Cert-Machine.drm
    • del /f %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\DRM\GIC*.drm
    • del /f %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\DRM\CLC*.drm
  3. Restart Outlook and see if the problem still persists.

The fix for the root cause was already released for XP/WS03 and is in current Vista SP1 builds, and will also go up as a Vista RTM GDR.
