It's that time again - with all the storms brewing in the various tropics and fall approaching here in the Northwest of the US, we should all check our Disaster Recovery (DR) plans. I used to live in Florida, and during my many years there I faced several hurricanes and tropical storms. More than once we had to evacuate a building, and it was up to the IT staff to protect our technology assets from the impending problems.
At the very least you should check your off-site backups, make sure you have some way to restore those backups, and test at least a sample of them. Even better is to review your complete DR strategy and even perform an exercise or two to make sure they work. It's a lot of trouble and inconvenience, but like buying insurance, you'll be glad you did when the time comes.
