SQL Server Management Studio Standard Reports - Activity – Top Connections

I'm continuing my series on the Standard Reports in SQL Server Management Studio, and today I'm covering another "Activity" report. I covered other activity reports, most from the viewpoint of users or sessions. This report shows much of the same information, but from the viewpoint of a connection. This is useful in large organizations or where you are a decentralized operation. This is also useful information when you can't count on the session or user information to be reliable. This can happen if you use application roles or the applications don't set the name properly.

You have three bands in this report:

• 10 Oldest Connections
• Top Ten Connections By # Reads
• Top Ten Connections By # Writes

They all have the same columns, just reporting on different axes. Here's the information you get in this report:

Connection ID	A number that uniquely identifies the connection.
Session ID	A number that uniquely identifies the session.
Connect Time	Timestamp when connection was established.
Number Reads	Number of data packet reads that have occurred over this connection.
Number Writes	Number of data packet writes that have occurred over this connection.
Last Read	Timestamp when last read occurred over this connection.
Last Write	Timestamp when last write occurred over this connection.
Client Net Address	Host address of the client connecting to this server.
Client TCP Port	Port number on the client computer that is associated with this connection. This isn't the same as the port that the server is using for the connection.
# Requests	The number of requests from this connection.
