SQL Server Management Studio Standard Reports – Login Failures

 I'm continuing my series on the Standard Reports in SQL Server Management Studio, and today we’re in the Security reports. You can find these reports by starting SQL Server Management Studio and right-clicking the Logins node underneath the Security node. From the menu that appears, click the Standard Reports, and then select the title at the top of this post. As the title states, this report shows information about login attempts that have failed. It shows historical information on these attempts, gathered from the Event Logs.

The first section of the report is a graph showing failed login attempts over time.

The second section of this report shows the failed logins by user name. These names are SQL Server login names as well as from integrated authentication.

The third section of this report shows the failed logins based on the cause of the failure:

Column	Description
Login Failure Category	A category showing various failure types for the login attempt.
Error No.	The SQL Server error code associated with the failure. This can help you track down specific issues with the attempt
Login Name	The SQL Server login name, which in Integrated authentication mode is mapped to a windows login
Host Name	The name of the computer host where the Login was attempted
Application Name	The name of the application where the login was attempted.
Time	The time of the login attempt- this is the time on the SQL Server
Error Message	The error message text associated with the login failure
NT User Name	The windows user name mapped to the login, if using Integrated authentication
NT Domain Name	The Windows use’s group name mapped to the login, if using Integrated authentication
