Donald Farmer and I are headed for a smackdown.
If you don't know who Donald Farmer is, you probably haven't been to any technical conferences where BI was discussed. He's simply one of the finest minds on the topic that there is. Hius demos are flawless, he is engaging, interesting, and an all around bright guy. But this time, he's gone too far.
In a recent Facebook Post, Donald had teh unmittigated gall to insinuate that the BI features are the best new thing in SQL Server 2008 R2, the upcoming release of SQL Server. Sure, there are lots of new BI features, and turning data into "pretty pictures" is cool and all that, but c'mon - he thinks that beats Multi-server management, Data Tier application control, enhancements in the MDW and all the other cool DBA tools that R2 brings to the table? Surely he jests.
Well, in November he and I will share a stage at Teched Europe. The "Real World DBA" meets the "BI Master" - in a no-holds barred grudge match. We'll let the audience decide.
Bring it on, picture-boy.
Laaaaaaadies and gentlemen, in this corner, in the yellow trunks, Donald "Gold" Farmer, the man who can find riches in your dirty data.
Aaaaand in this corner, in the brown trunks, it's the man with the dome, Buck "Minster" Woody!
Will the Buck stop here, or will The Other Donald give him the cobra? Let's get reeeeeady to ruuuumble!
Well, I really don't want to gloat ahead of time, but I think any RATIONAL person will find the DBA tools far more productive than some Office Add-In. I'm just sayin.
I am not sure you want to mess with a Scotsman though :-)
Bah. He doesn't scare me. Of course, he *is* better looking....
