Based on the FAST 2010 white paper, i can project a local storage needed of about 17% of the content databases, which is huge. (mainly for the read only index file, which looks a flat file rather than SQL)

Can you confirm this architecture is still valid in 2013? Thanks!

it's actually a two liner,

$spapp = Get-SPServiceApplication -Name "Search Service Application"

Remove-SPServiceApplication $spapp -RemoveData

An alternate way to prevent field conflicts during development: put the following script calls in your Visual Studio pre-deploy command line box. These effectively drop and recreate the site. They run surprisingly quick, but, do add a few seconds more to your 'F5' rapid interative development cycles:

stsadm -o deletesite -url devbox01.mycompany.local

stsadm -o createsite -url devbox01.mycompany.local -owneremail me@mycompany.com -ownerlogin MYCOMPANY\me -siteTemplate "STS#1" -description "This site is a Visual Studio test bed. It may get blasted away and recreated without notice." -title "My Development Site"
